American style fridge freezer - small space

We're in the middle of redoing our kitchen and we are looking for an American style fridge freezer which can fit into a small space - the doors can't open much more than 90 degrees. We've found this one www.fisherpaykel.com/uk/kitchen/fridge-freezers/fridges/activesmart-fridge-900mm-french-door-545l.RF610ADX4.html, but it is really expensive, so I was wondering if anyone else has any suggestions? Thanks!

What is it you specifically like about an American ff? Why not get a regular one - not being snarky - genuine question?

GreengageJam · 30/07/2017 21:50

We really like the size of them, and we actually have a decent space in the kitchen for one to fit into - but they all seem to need to have really wide opening doors!

I have one and the fridge is great, the ice maker is brilliant but the freezer is very small you couldn't put a regular sized pizza in it, so unless you have an additional freezer I wouldn't bother. Thoroughly check the cubic capacity on them but also see them in person as some capacities can be misleading. We are having a new kitchen and having full height side by side separate fridge and freezer as they have loads more room. Also bear in mind the depth on American ffs is much more than usual so the housing needs to accommodate that and the pivot of the doors

We have a Whirlpool American FF but only because we wanted plumbed in water and ice dispensers.

But you will need to be able to open the door more than 90 degrees just for ease of access into the fridge. The door bins are fairly deep and will impeded you somewhat, plus you will never be able to remove shelves or the storage bins because you have to open the door wide enough to do that. The ice maker in the freezer will also restrict access if you can't put the door more than 90 degrees.

Also the freezer storage space is very limited. I have an additional larder freezer in the pantry. This was the only reason we got the American FF.

You need to physically handle one. We went into Currys or something similar and had a play with all of them to see what it was like in reality. Or watch some videos of people handling them like

Are you sure you won't be able to open the doors more than ninety degrees? American style FFs are deeper so it will be proud of your other units and maybe not as restricted as you think unless it's going in an alcove of some sort.

GreengageJam · 01/08/2017 10:45

We won't be able to open the doors more than about 90 degrees because the ff will be slotting into an alcove rather than sitting in between units. The alcove is plenty big enough for a large fridge freezer - it's just the issue of the doors which is the problem!

why dont you look at one with integrated handles
this way you lose 3/4/5 cms straight away on the opening angle.
eg..... the link below you can still excess all the trays @ 90 opening as that would be the main issue

Also there are some with two doors for the fridge with drawers for the freezer underneath. This is what we will get next time as I hate, hate, hate the freezer - too narrow & everything slides out of it. Ours is Whirlpool & it's always been crap, has been on the verge of dying for the whole 11 years we've had it, but won't quite do it properly so that I can justify the expense of a new one!

Rosehips · 01/08/2017 11:56

Is the alcove big enough to put a 60cn fridge next to a 60cm freezer? Buy the same make and have the handles in the middle and it would like an a merica. Ff

GreengageJam · 01/08/2017 17:34

Unfortunately not quite - the gap is about 1100 mm. It's sooo frustrating!

There's a slim LG one my mother has and it's the only one that would work for her space

I had an American fridge freezer, when we done our kitchen out a few years back. I really regretted the purchase, the fridge was fine, the freezer was a total pain, due to glass shelves rather than baskets, never enough space etc. The novelty of the water and ice soon wore off. We have since replaced it with a usual fridge freezer. I did feel a little guilty about doing so as it was still working. But quite honestly I was pleased to see the back of it. Not wishing to rain on your parade OP, and if it's what you want go for it, but I wouldn't recommend.

There are lots of 90 cm wide models - which would give you 10 cm either side for the doors to open into.

Otherwise, can you not have a wider one stood slightly forward so that the doors can open fully?

I would be tempted with a French style one next time - the American style one we had didn't have a lot of freezer capacity (and that was without a water dispenser / ice maker).

I was just coming in suggest looking at Fisher-Paykel. We have recently moved into a house with a small space and that was what they had. The vendor asked for what we initially assumed to be a crazy price to leave it, but we really couldn't find anything else. We reluctantly bought it from them, and it is amazing. It has so much volume for it's size - it almost seems to store more than our previous American FF.

We have this one which I have been really impressed with
