Bathroom fitting recommendations - wall hung

After much debate (and some amazing MN insights from many previous bathroom threads!) our new bathroom will look something like this basic picture. Two walls fully tiled in a neutral tile, bath panel also in same tile. A partition wall built out and fully tiled, there will be an alcove with shelf, accent tiles and perhaps lights. The wall will house a concealed cistern and a wall hung vanity unit sink to hopefully make the floor/bathroom appear larger. Mirrored cabinets will be fitted in for storage and include shaver sockets x 2.

There will be a shower above the bath (right of window, which will be properly sealed to prevent leaks) and a frameless folding shower screen. Consideration will be given for pipe/cistern access whether possible, venting options and spare tiles will be bought. Floor, sink unit, alcove shelf will be waterproof wood, laminate or vinyl in dark wood effect to contrast with the neutral tiles.

Ok I admit, it is a boring bathroom, but as we are in a modern house with little character, dh/ds have vetoed patterned tiles, and we are looking for practicality and easy cleaning, it ticks most of our boxes. I can see the MN hive has a wealth of bathroom knowledge and I'm looking to learn from your experience, especially around the big ticket items below -

Vanity unit/Sink - I have struggled to find a dark wood/brown wall mounted vanity with drawers and a ceramic sink at a reasonable price (

Have you looked at the Duravit range? They have some nice quality vanity/storage units rather like what you are describing and their wall hung wcs are excellent. You will need a Gerberit concealed cistern and frame to go with the wc.

Re: taps, I think Crosswater is a good mid-range brand, decent quality. Think you will have to get your plumber to let you know what your pressure is and then check with the manufacturers direct re: suitability. Will post links shortly...

orangina · 30/07/2017 14:22

Just looked at your links.... think you are right to be concerned e: quality and if you can possibly look at something before you buy it, you will feel more comfortable. Bathstore.com have some reasonable units, but some of them feel v flimsy and horrible, but not all of them. They always have some kind of discount deal going on as well, so worth bearing in mind when considering your options.

orangina · 30/07/2017 14:23

Duravit wall hung wcs here. I like the Starck3 as it is v simple and is available in normal size and compact (still a good size).

orangina · 30/07/2017 14:25

gerberit cisterns/frames here

Just something to check, find out the cost now of replacement loo seats. We chose really nice, sleek and modern loos, for the house, only to find out later that they do not fit standard replacement seats and the manufacturers ones cost £95+vat each. It was an expense we hadn't counted on!

WeAllHaveWings · 30/07/2017 15:05

orangina, I looked at the Duravit range and there are some nice styles and a fantastic of colours, but expensive. Also they are foil wrapped MDF which, as well as the prices, put me off me as our first flat had foiled wrapped units which swelled with water ingress at the corners (cant remember if they were MDF or chipboard as 15 years ago).

We had a new shower fitted and the pressure was rubbish compared to how it was before. We realised that the new hose was really narrow and tried it with the old one, which solved the problem. When we do our other bathroom we'll be fixing the shower head to the wall instead of having it at an adjustable height with a hose. Not sure yet whether we'll have a hose as well (you see them lower down for cleaning, rinsing etc).

Not sure what you had planned for your shower but just thought I'd mention it! Sorry, don't have any suggestions for any of the questions you asked but watching with interest for tips.

We have an IKEA wall hung basin unit - not sure they have a wood effect one though.

We also have groehe taps and duravit toilet (although the plumber talked us out of a wall mounted WC because of the pipe positions plus cost).

WeAllHaveWings · 30/07/2017 16:18

didi always forget about Ikea. They do have a nice ODENSVIK/ GODMORGON vanity in solid wood, but it doesn't say what material the sink is made of, is yours ceramic?

GreenTulips · 30/07/2017 16:25

Grove taps are apparently the best ones - not too pricey either

I mixed and matched - white Ian white so you don't need to by the same 'range' it will still match

I found say one was cheaper on the bath but more expensively on the loo - or showers screen was extortionate

QS supplies were the best I found for the bath and screen
I wanted a certain sink so that's from eBay
I have a waterfall tap but it's not plumbed I yet! I'll let you know

woodhill · 30/07/2017 16:28

This thread is helpful as we are doing our bathroom too. Duravit seems a good make

YorkshireTea86 · 30/07/2017 16:47

The odensvik sinks are ceramic. It says it in the 'good to know and materials bit on the sink itself rather than the unit description.

Millybingbong · 30/07/2017 16:54

Vote for ikea sinks here. I wish they did the rest of it too then it would be job done. #ikeahome

WeAllHaveWings · 30/07/2017 17:38

Yorkshire thanks, looked at the sink but didn't realise I had to click on each of the links to see the rest of the details. Trip to Ikea next weekend for me then.

OK, toilet now, orangina, I saw the gerberit frames/cisterns for the wall hung WC, lots of different ones Confused. I'll ask the fitter which one we need to get for the WC we choose, from previous MN threads I know I want a nice strong flush from the cistern and a standard shape loo for future replacement seats and a large "drop zone" Grin

Off to look at loo suggestions.

GreenTulips · 30/07/2017 19:35

You need to know if the pipe goes out - I'll assume yours does - rather than down -

Remember you need additional fittings like bath waste and sink waste and pipes for the loo

Tulips2lips · 31/07/2017 14:56

check out emotion-24.

They do a range of vanity units from 250 ish. However you will want this £500 65cm pre assembled villeroy & boch subway 2 one :-)

Anyone used Victoria Plum for bathrooms

GreenTulips · 03/08/2017 11:15

Quite a few plumbers asked me not to use them - because stuff broke or had odd fittings - so ask your plumber first!

Also I found them expensive compared to other suppliers - look at builders merchants or plumbing merchants for better pricing without the show room effect

woodhill · 03/08/2017 12:40

Plumber is dh lol.

WeAllHaveWings · 03/08/2017 18:57

Like the look of the Ideal Standard wall hung toilets, and they have a good reputation, so will speak to the plumber when we find one to see what his thoughts are on them.

Looking for a bath now. I know I need a reinforced one to prevent movement/damage to seals as we will have a shower over it. Carronite seem expensive popular, there is a brand Pura which qssupplies stocks which is reinforced but considerably cheaper than carron, does anyone recommend/advise against these?

OP posts:
GreenTulips · 03/08/2017 19:14

Ours is from QS supplies cheaper end - it's very sturdy - P shaped bath £190 inc panel and shower screen -

woodhill · 12/08/2017 18:51

The p- shaped baths don't seem to have any handles, is this a problem

GreenTulips · 12/08/2017 18:53

They all come without tap holes or handles - they are added at ch clout of you want them

GreenTulips · 12/08/2017 18:54

The plumbers drill the tap holes - we have wall taps as I didn't want holes in the bath
