Roughly how much will an electrician charge me to change the facings of two double sockets and a light switch? I have the facings. I phoned one earlier who is coming tomorrow and I got off the phone before I realised i hadn't asked how much it will be Confused

Does depend where you are
But I've just had my shower changed and he charged £36 for the first 30 mins then £25 for each half hour

  • 20% vat

So £103 for 90 mins work?? Jeez. Where are you?

Fylde coast lancs

Many tradespeople charge £100 just to come out (and may include a small job in that price).
I read recently that electricians are an expensive trade and often charge £250 as a day rate for larger jobs.
We recently had a small (less than an hour) job done and it was £110 plus vat (outer London).

insancerre · 27/07/2017 19:02

My total bill was £118
As he charged me a premium call out charge to come out past 5pm
He then had to come back as we had to buy a new shower

I've had a price fr fitting new doors of £55 per door
I've got 11Shock

You can do it yourself very easily if you prefer?

PaintingByNumbers · 27/07/2017 19:04

Or get a handyman type person cheaper, you dont need an electrician for that job

Fairylea · 27/07/2017 19:06

We paid £25 to have a socket changed but we are in Norfolk so I think things tend to be cheaper here..!

spewylewis · 27/07/2017 19:10

This shows how completely clueless I am about these things! I thought it would take maybe 20 mins each one, so maybe £40/£50.

I'm really not confident in doing it myself. My brother offered too, but I'd rather get someone in.

Honestly, five minute job, anyone could do it.

PaintingByNumbers · 27/07/2017 19:17

Why not just let your brother do it? Its really truly honestly not necessary to be an electrician to do that job.

OMFL · 27/07/2017 19:28

No idea but we had a new kitchen tap pit on today as it kept leakibg and whistling. The tap cost £70. It took the guy a very slow 15 minutes. It cost £90 for labour!!!! Wtaf!!!!??? Who else earns £90 in 15 mins?? Apparently its a flat rate charge per hour regardless if its 59 mins or 5 mins. Tossers! I am now living in fear of touching the tap and feel i should pray to it instead! 😯

HipsterHunter · 27/07/2017 19:40

That isn't electrician work - changing facings is one of the few 'electrics' that is still ok for DIY.

Your brother or a handyman would be a better bet.

user1486062886 · 27/07/2017 19:49

A good local friendly electrician would be happy with £40 -50 cash and a cup of tea, boil the kettle before they switch the sockets off.

ACurlyWurly · 28/07/2017 10:08

I just paid £130 to have 1 socket disconnected and removed, 2 sockets moved to new location, 1 lightswitch moved to other side of the room and 2 light fittings removed and replaced with pendants. Took him about 2 hours.

RatRolyPoly · 28/07/2017 10:14

I agree, let your brother do it, it really isn't electrician's work - and they're expensive! If you're worried about him wiring something wrong (electrics are scary when they go wrong) then be reassured that any issue will trip the circuit breaker in your fuse box so you needn't be worried about fires or anything dramatic like that. Save your pennies!

PonderLand · 28/07/2017 10:53

You can change them yourself, my DP who isn't an electrician or a diy'er did ours by watching YouTube

spewylewis · 28/07/2017 11:59

Okay, I have cancelled the electrician and my brother will do it. SmileConfused
