Can this door be repaired

With the position close to the handle and the catch and size of the damage I would say replace unless the missing chunk is there and can be glued back. Looks like the locked door has been kicked to open it.

It looks to me like a hollow flush door, quite old. They are rubbish and very cheap. Not worth repairing.

I see it has a poor-quality locking knobset on it. Is it a front door? Or a bedroom? Should it be fire-resisting?

I'd say it would cost more to try to repair to any reasonable state. I'd say replace it with a good quality door and as suggested by PJ have a thought to fire requrements, a 60 minute fire door doesn't break the bank even including intumescent strips etc.

Hi

Sorry guys for not getting back to you. It's a bedroom door, and the missing piece has been chucked. So I guess new door is in order. Any recommendations on where to look? No idea on fire resistance as is original door. Lock is also a goner. Any rough ideas of cost for a decent door and lock - don't want to overcharge tenant but not cut corners either.

Thanks againSmile

do you want the door to be lockable and resist entry?

is it an HMO?

How many stories high is the house?

c00k1e · 26/07/2017 15:14

Hi PJ,

It's not HMO or anything just has lockable doors. Just wanted rooms lockable for if we are away. But as trying to sell now it's not a biggy if they aren't. Just want something which has four panels - two small at bottom of the door. Larger at top so Keeps with rest of the doors. It's a big standard two storey house -

Thanks

A paint-grade, 4-panel door might be this sort of thing

You can get hollow or moulded doors but they are complete rubbish, except the thick fire doors which are solid chipboard and very heavy.

If you get a local chippy to fit it, he will know a local supplier that might offer a better deal.

As well as hinges, you will need a pair of knobs or handles. Look for something to match the rest of the house on IronmongeryDirect.

Your old one was a "hotel style knobset" but unless you need to match it, an ordinary knob or handle with a tubular mortice latch will be adequate.

For a lever handle you need about at least a 44mm backset; for a knob you need at least 60mm backset or you will bang your hand on the doorframe.
See www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/search?SearchText=mortice+latch
