I'm separated, I've been a homeowner for a gazillion years but my stbxh always sorted the paperwork ... yes, yes - a bit pathetic, I know!

I'm moving in 3 days.

I have no idea how to sort gas, electric and broadband etc. Council tax?

I'll be a New Customer, I'm not switching/carrying over any accounts etc from the marital home as my XH is staying put.

I got the laptop out last night to compare broadband deals.
The current owners are on sky, I opened a query/quote with them but then I ended it. I'm hoping that they come to me with a better deal?? Will they? I'm on NowTV, and love it, so sky seems an obvious choice. I pay £17pm for nowtv currently.

Gas and electricity, I don't know where to start with! I can find out who my sellers are with, if need be.

Council tax, how do you notify for new ownership (and single occupancy)

Any advice will be greatly appreciated 👍🏼

Please also point out things that are glaringly obvious that I'm overlooking 😩

House insurance is another thing, I'm going to get on with pricing that this morning. Any advice is welcome.

Try Money Saving Expert's cheap energy club for good deals on gas and electric, you may be able to get some cashback for switching. You could ask the current owner who they use, as I think switching usually takes a couple of weeks so you may need to register with them for now.

I always take photos of the meters on moving day (both old and new properties), so you don't get charged for someone else's usage.

Make sure your name is taken off everything at your old house.

You should contact broadband/TV etc asap as they may take some time to connect you (unless you use the same provider as the current owner).

Council tax will be done through your local council - try their website, there may be an online form or you may need to call them.

If you are redirecting your post you need to do that ASAP as it takes 5 working days to kick in.

Are you buying or renting? If you are buying you need buildings insurance from the date of exchange (not completion). If renting, then you just need contents insurance.

Buying!

Thanks awkward! I'll go over your suggestions now.

Use google to find out how to do all of the following.

  • Post redirection
  • Contents insurance (plus buildings if you own)
  • Council tax
  • Electoral register
  • Gas + electric - do duel fuel, check via a comparisons site. Take meter readings the day you move in.
  • Water - is it a meter? If so take meter reading. Call the water company to set up new account.
  • Internet / TV. Decide what you want, totally up to you. I just got broadband only with virgin as cheapest/best in my area then use a freeview box and netflix.
  • Call car insurance and give new address, they usually screw you and charge you extra.
  • Update address on banks, pensions, work,, gym membership, phone contract, everything
  • Change address on on driving license and the registered address of the car.
  • Do you need a car parking permit? If so you have to do the above first.

If you are moving to a leasehold flat building insurance is likely to be included in your annual service charge.

No, I'm moving into a semi detached.
