Changing kitchen counter upstand

Our inherited kitchen is nice enough that we won't be changing anything major for quite some time but, the counter top is made of the laminated chip board stuff as are the matching upstands.

This is all in good condition except behind the sink where the coating on the upstand is cracked and broken

I don't want to replace it like for like as suspect the same thing will happen again but am looking for alternative ideas, this is slightly complicated as there is a large window behind the sink and the sill is about a centimetre higher than the work surface so not high enough to tile

Does anyone have any ideas what can be done as an alternative for this area? Been searching Pinterest but not come across anything yet - thanks in advance :)

It's a lovely big sill but is set slightly higher than the worktop - so far the only idea I have come up with is some form of beading along the back of the sink and separating off the sill from the work top with a (very) low metal railing like you would put along a wall - we have a tendency to clutter so am trying to prevent things being put randomly only the sill

The Hafele Rangemaster Mezzo sink. It runs right back to the wall, it does not need worktop underneath it. It sits on top of a 1000mm kitchen unit.

The same idea as the Asterite Bistro sink which now appears to have been discontinued.

You could put a strip of brushed stainless steel on the wall behind it.
