Would you recommend removal company packing your stuff?

We have a two bed property and am thinking about packing myself but then a colleague said she would definitely get it packed? What have you done? I haven't moved in 14 years and when we did we didn't have two kids!

Another yes here - and another recommendation for GB Liners.

They were great packing and loading without letting the cat escape too.

On mn packers seem cheap. All my rl quotes were double the removal costs. I'm actually finding that by packing ourselves we are having a proper sort out which I'd rather do now than after we move in. If we're sorting anyway I may as well just pack too.

In rl I don't know anyone who has used packers except my dm and that was only for fragile stuff.

Our quote was £1k or more for just packing (3 bed house)

We are having beds and wardrobes taken apart and re built though.

Our move was £1,300 and for packing it was an extra £250 ( 10 years ago)

I guess it depends on how much stuff you have for them to pack. I did a deep declutter before putting my place on the market so when the removals people can to scope the place there really didn't seem a lot to pack.

Anything that could be chucked was. And I don't have any kids so that will cut down on stuff.

All my packing quotes were less than £200 on top of the removal fee. All BAR registered removers.

We had a 5 bed house with a full garage - packing was £300 with £500 for the removal a year ago (only moved 0.5 miles).

Giraffeski · 19/07/2017 07:39

Randomly- what company was that? We are only moving half a mile or so also, starting to look for quotes.

It was a small local company that came on a recommendation. Our quotes varied from £750 to £1500 exc. VAT (the most expensive one was a larger firm).

Oh wow - I've been toying with the idea and stumbled across this thread as I'm about to post on a different topic, but glad I did!!!! You've made my mind up!!!

Our removal & packing service cost £840, not sure how much of that the packing was. But we were packing up a 2 bed flat with all furniture and it included dismantling & reassembling our flat pack stuff if needed. It was worth the money just to not have to dismantle & rebuild our massive bed ourselves!

Definitely recommend it but do completely agree with whoever said you need to have a huge de-clutter first. They will pack absolutely everything (ours even packed the plug from the sink - we had to return it the next day) and you don't want to be taking a load of your 'I"m going to get rid of it/I'm not sure whether to keep it/I'm saving it for....' to your new house.

Yes,you just need to talk about your needs when they come round to quote.

I swore by those little red dot stickers you can get from WH Smith. I popped those on anything we were leaving behind for our buyers. I also stuck a bit of paper on each bedroom (1,2,3,4) and numbered the bedrooms on a print out of the floor plan for the house we were going into. Made sure that all the right boxes were put into the right rooms at the other end (not to mention beds that were being put up again etc.). Worked like a charm.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 19/07/2017 22:46

I did that tooSad

Smile I mean!!!

Yes, but I'd pack and keep out all valuables. We've had a couple of friends who used a reputable and recommended company but then realised some of their valuable jewellery (as well as a few other items) had gone missing after unpacking in their new house and there wasn't much they could do about it.
We've used a packing removal service which was bliss however I kept my valuables with me and put a couple boxes in my parents house before moving day.
