kitchen design take 1!

This is my first draft of a kitchen design. The house is still under offer (!) but I will be relocating the kitchen. When we've actually completed I'll be looking at getting a professional design and probably go with DIY kitchen. Not sure of style yet, but any thoughts on this layout would be much appreciated. There will be 4 stools at the island. Would prefer raised ovens to range (I think). Planning for sink and 2 dishwashers in the island. Loads of pan drawers. I'm thinking of sacrifing our amazing (ice/water dispensing) american f/f for integrated :(. Not a fan off wall cabinets but it feels off balance without them? What style of extractor fan to go for??? House is a victorian villa, so want a modern but classic style

The entrance to the room is on the wall to the right. Should we make room for a sofa area too? The space to the right is a bit wasted isn't it?

600 pan drawers dont actually hold that many pans, you would be best making them 900/1000/1200
I would use the whole back wall (where tall units are) turn the island giving a longer island and lots of space for table and sofa at the other side of the room

Thank you great advice

Is there a dining room elsewhere or would this be the only dining space?

mrmonk · 16/07/2017 22:54

Well there are 2 reception rooms but currently planning living room and play room then teenage hang out space

There's a real pinch point where the island table is closest to the patio doors. I'd look at reconfiguring the two walls of units to have more space for an actual dining table. Perhaps a peninsula dividing the kitchen and dining areas?

Maybe look at changing the island set up too so there is a breakfast bar area at the island - room for a couple of stools. Something like this from DIY Kitchens' showroom.

Agree with wowfudge that it seems quite narrow between the corner of the table and the patio doors. I'd maybe look at using the whole of wall A, less of wall B, turning the island so it's horizontal to wall A and putting the table more in the left hand corner.

wowfudge · 17/07/2017 09:25

Looking at the shape of the room I can't help thinking that a good kitchen designer will be able to come up with a design with real impact to make the best use of the available space. That island table is really inflexible as it eats into the rest of the room making it tricky to put other furniture in and if you ever needed to seat more people, it would be tricky. There's a lot of space, but it's not very useable.

HipsterHunter · 17/07/2017 09:36

Agree with wowfudge, the room is big so you have a great opportunity but it is a slightly awkward space that would benefit from a real kitchen designer putting some thought into.

mrmonk · 17/07/2017 10:05

Yes I'll definitely get a kitchen designer on board when we complete. Unfortunately we will need to save on the kitchen itself so not quite sure how to combine that with a good designer atm!! There is a door to small wc in top left corner which makes the space even more awkward and I really don't think we'll manage to get a sofa in here too without it feeling squeezed in. But without one we won't be able to sit and enjoy views of the garden (2 reception rooms face road). It definitely is a tricky space but has huge potential :)

Is that door on your plan or not? I have some ideas for your space, but I'm not a kitchen designer Smile

superram · 17/07/2017 10:32

I would extend the length of units down one wall to make more room at one side. I would have a triangular island. Lose the table and have it freestanding.

mrmonk · 17/07/2017 10:38

on wall c there is a door to the left and window to the right.

triangular island is a very interesting idea!

I have a feeling this is going to go way over budget...!

Have you a real life picture of the room as it is now?

NotMeNoNo · 17/07/2017 10:39

If the designer knows you are on a budget they will work to it.

That's an enormous space so it really needs to be well zoned.
Why sacrifice your American FF if you're on a budget? A freestanding larder - need not be too farmhousey - is a good way to store a lot of food without wall units. Similarly 2 dishwashers make expensive cupboards, have a good 800-1000 wide drawer stack in the island will take all your cutlery and crockery in Ikea plate holders and unload straight from the DW.

I've seen a kitchen in a corner where the island is a run of units with a slightly higher back and a shelf/breakfast bar. Could you do this with a diagonal to avoid a pinch point? Try and imagine the "flow" through the room. Where is the back door?

I don't suppose this is the perfect arrangement of ovens etc but you get the idea anyway.

That is a fantastic use of space thank you notme :)

The house is under offer and currently this 'kitchen' is 2 living spaces that we are planning on knocking together.

There will be a lot of messy work needed in the house, so planning to stay with my parents and get all the work done before we move in. However, I don't want to spend money on a kitchen designer until we've definitely completed!

Also don't want to share a link as I'm absolutely paranoid as it's my dream house, but there is a hall to the right of the kitchen then the current kitchen will become a utility/boot room with door to back garden. There are french doors on the diagonal wall that lead to the garden in this room.

Thanks for all the fab ideas :)

NotMe's idea is great. You see that kind of set up quite a bit in US and Australian kitchen diners with an island - might be worth looking on Pinterest?

wowfudge · 17/07/2017 11:18

You don't need to spend money on a designer - you can approach kitchen companies and ask them to do a design. We did that with Magnet thinking we would use them. Their free design was brilliant but the costs of the actual kitchen astronomical. So we ordered the kitchen from DIY.

NotMeNoNo · 17/07/2017 21:46

Thanks Smile. I would use your time productively by trying out some more layouts (I got up to version 27 on the Ikea planner). Start a pinterest board and go to loads of showrooms especially ikea as their ideas are really good and they show whole kitchens. There will be lots of ways of solving it and the more you know what you want, the more you can bargain hunt, if you are on a budget.
