Can I build on top of our attached garage

We have an attached garage which we've converted into a kitchen. It's quite close to the neighbours house but the only thing he has on his side is a bathroom window which is frosted glass. We are in desperate need of more space so either thinking of building another room on top or converting the loft if it's too close to the neighbours to be allowed

No one else on the street has the same style house as ours so no precedent.

Anyone done something similar?

Thanks

Presumably, you got planning permission to convert the garage?
First step would be to go back and talk to the planning dept. and check what the rules for your area are, as they can vary enormously depending on where you live.

My parents kind of did this when we were young, we had a room with a sloping roof above the garage & they had it squared off. I think it will depend upon the garage's foundations.

Phone your council planning office and ask.

I've always found them very helpful, and will give you a rough idea of what may be allowed.

Also, have any of your neighbours done similar? If they have, you will be allowed to.

We did but we had to have the garage underpinned which might be quite tricky if you have already converted the garage.

It's unlikely that your garage will be structurally up to bearing another storey - you may need to demolish it and start from scratch. I believe that local authorities now frown on side extensions if they go up to the boundary so your proposal may be ok if there is land to the side of the garage but not if it means building up to the edge of the plot.

Thanks

Very helpful

Yes it goes right up to boundary so prob a no no

Will investigate loft conversions instead

Thanks

About 50% of the houses are here have done it! Gives you 2 extra rooms well worth it
