Tiling an uneven kitchen wall - any advice?

I've decided we really need to tile the bit of wall between the worktop and units but I am a bit nervous because it is not perfectly flat (old house). Is this doable for someone tiling for the first time?

Also, would you remove the upstands and tile from the worktop or tile from the upstands only?

And in case you are still listening, would you match tiles to the units (cream) to make it easier to play with wall colours or will that just look too dull?

Any advice appreciated!

if it is just an old wall and a bit iffy then you can even it up with a good layer of tile cement and making sure the tiles are level with one another...use a baton of wood to ensure this

if it is really shot to shite then you can locate the wall studs and fix a sheet of plasterboard over, and then the tiles fix on that, but you will lose a little worktop depth

apols for the random letters....keyboard is shot and I have to paste them in until the new one arrives. I forgot to delete them

That's reassuring, thanks! It's uneven but not so bad it's needs plasterboard, I think (though every other wall in the house seems to have been dry-lined).
