Has anyone NOT done the whole open plan kitchen diner thing?

Seems like everyone is taking the wall out between kitchen and diner these days, but has anyone decided to keep it separate?

Our kitchen is pretty much four metres by four metres, so big enough for a decent kitchen and table for six people. No patio doors but attached to a boot room where the back door is.

We then have a big dining room that is also used as a family room, with dining table, sofas, open fire and patio doors to garden. We also have a similar size lounge, a laundry and the boot room.

We need a new kitchen and I guess the obvious thing is to take out the wall, but it's great having a separate room and am thinking that will be really useful when our three pre schoolers are older. But don't want to spend lots of money on a kitchen and then regret not taking out the wall.

Anyone kept it separate and regretted it? Or knocked through and wish they hadn't?

for me a table in the kitchen is essential.
Especially if you have kids.

We have a big kitchen with table, plus a dining room which is used for eating as soon as we have visitors, but also is music room, x box room and craft sewing room. None of which would really work if it was a kitchen diner.

I want to be in my kitchen with radio on, and I don't want to be disturbed by someone practising piano, watching TV, etc etc .
Noise is what puts me off big open plan living

I like having separate spaces in the house. Defined areas for confining mess, activity etc to it's designated place. I would never knock through if it meant not also having a separate dining room and lounge.

We have an open kitchen, diner and sitting room and it works very well for us. We've just got rid of the dining room as we never used it and made it into a cosy den / Tv room but I can't imagine choosing to have a kitchen you can't sit in

We have kept the kitchen, dining room and living rooms as they were when we bought the house. I prefer not to have people in the kitchen when I am cooking, I like to be able to move about without banging into someone or constantly having to get round them. I also prefer to keep cooking smells contained.

Looking at houses to buy I think it is a shame that so many no longer have actual rooms, and wouldn't want the bother of putting the walls back. It is a fashion that I wish would change, OK in new houses but removes the character from old ones.

We've knocked the wall down between the kitchen and conservatory and the difference is amazing. We have a peninsular between the two with sofas in the conservatory area so it's very light and sociable. Peninsular is great for leaning on with a glass of wine chatting whilst husband cooks! Grin. We also are lucky enough to have a separate dining room with folding doors joining the conservatory so we can open the whole lot up for parties! We wish we knocked the wall out years ago.
