Knock Through

Seriously considering having our living room and dining room knocked through. We're in our 'forever home' but now we have our first child, the living room feels tiny.
We have a garage which eventually we want to turn into a living space of some description too, so we won't lose out on a proper dining room as such, but I just wondered if anyone had done this and regretted it, or loved it.
Also did you redecorate the whole of both rooms if you did? And how disruptive was the work?

Thanks

Think very carefully. There is this whole tinkly idea round open plan life, but in reality, it can be very annoying if you want to watch TV and the washing machine is on; or one of you wants to do something quietly while the other wants music or something noisy etc etc

You know the saying "good fences make good neighbours"?
Well, "good doors make happy households" too Smile

I'd much rather have kitchen and adjacent room knocked together and keep a separate reception room.

we have a living room knocked through to dining room but have french doors in between the two so we can still close it off so we have space but also the ability to shut away the kitchen/dining room noise.

it works really well

Thanks all. I think we'd definitely want a separate reception room too, which is where the garage conversion would come in. I like the idea of French doors, as that way it'd be more flexible.
