Tiles as upstands

Could I tile up 20cm (2x10cm squared tiles) as a kitchen splashback or is it either upstands or a full tiled splashback? The tiles are mosaic/busy and it's a long run of worktop. This is not for behind the hob. Can't find any images of this and wondering if it's a bad idea. TIA

I think it's fine but do you have to use mosaic tiles? Lots of grout which is hard to clean. I did granite up stands and matt white giant tiles behind. Each one tile (put portrait way up) reached up to the wall cupboards above the worktop. Very easy to clean.

Mosaic is not easy to clean. I have a 4 inch granite upstanding and the splash back behind the sink is a mirror. (Hob on an island). Cleaning grout all the time is not my favourite pastime.

Hi there, i work in a tile shop and we get this all the time. The general rule, if you are not tiling the full gap between the worktop and the wall units is, measure the gap and then go less than half. For example, the gap is normally 45 to 50 cm deep so, if it's 45 you would tile no more than 22.5 cm

the grout will always be dirty. Try medium grey grout.

Thanks everyone, this is really helpful. I know mosaic tiles aren't a great idea but I live in quite a boxy ex council flat and need to add a bit of character somehow. The light is also a bit odd in the kitchen so I don't want anything glossy as it will bounce all over the place and actually I think I will see watermarks etc less on the textured surface. Getting matt units for the same reason. I've tried a million other tile samples and they all looked very meh. I may try a different colour grout, although bit worried about the join line with the wall being quite obvious with a coloured grout, if I'm not tiling all the way up to the cupboards.

You could put a metal or coloured edging on your top row of tiles

OutandIntoday · 09/07/2017 22:46

Use matt rectangular stainless steel edging - there will be no join. Upstand the same as worktop is the norm though.
