Is 2000sq ft a big house??

We've just had an offer accepted on a 2000sq ft house and now oh is saying he's worried it's not big enough. We're a family of 4. It has 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms plus downstairs loo, 3 reception rooms, separate utility room, driveway, decent garden.

It's huge.

HoneyDragon · 09/07/2017 13:36

Unless you've previously been living in a palace?

Orroco · 09/07/2017 13:37

Not so stealth boast 😂

unikorn · 09/07/2017 13:38

No we've been in a terrace!! I've shut oh up quickly. Think he's just trying to live a pipe dream which we could never afford.

My house is 2200sqft, I have a sideboard, piano and two hall trees in the hallway alone. It's fucking huge, your oh is a muppet Grin

unikorn · 09/07/2017 13:41

He is a muppet

I suspect your room sizes are small, is this what he means? Mine is 2600 and we have less overall rooms. So your rooms must be much smaller.

It's not whether it's a big house, is it big enough for your family? Only you guys can decide this.

RelaxMax · 09/07/2017 13:43

We have 1400 square feet for 4 and that's enough.

2000 square feet is very big!

movingalong · 09/07/2017 13:44

The other houses on my road are 5000-6000 sq ft. When I had an agent round to value mine (2020sq ft) she said 'well, its VERY small isn't it, thats the problem'. So I think its all relative but my answer to your post would be that a family of four could very very comfortably live in a 2000 sq ft house.

unikorn · 09/07/2017 13:44

Bedroom 4 is small

It's fine, there are enough rooms for everyone to have their own space and you'll have a spare room. I live in a bigger house and the bigger it is the more there is to clean.

MardAsSnails · 09/07/2017 13:50

it's room sizes that make the difference in my opinion - a 3 bed house that's 2k sqft would be big, fitting in an extra bedroom would maybe make it feel small because the room sizes would be smaller if you see what I mean.

My house feels huge, but my bedroom is 8.4m x 4.8m PLUS dressing room and en suite. Living/diner is actually smaller than the bedroom so when downstairs is feels small and cramped, but when upstairs it feels massive.

Chchchchangeabout · 09/07/2017 13:51

Ours is 1500 sq ft and feels giant to me for 4 plus regular house guests. But we are in London so I guess everything is relative.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/07/2017 13:52

I don't think it's that big. But it might be big enough, depends how much space you'd like.

Our house was around 1700 before we had it almost doubled in size. I thought that was very small.

BrieOnAnOatcake · 09/07/2017 13:52

Wow can I have it if you don't want it.... (tiny house)

buggerthebotox · 09/07/2017 13:52

Depends on the layout.

Mine's about that but it has an impractical layout, so there are bits of it I never clean
see.

Your layout looks sensible, so yes, plenty room for 4 imho.

Bluntness100 · 09/07/2017 13:57

I see his issue, basically the conservatory is adding to the floor space and one bedroom is it an attic conversion? The other is basically no more than an office or single room? The rooms aren't that big to be fair,

I think it's not the overall square footage he's concerned about, possibly room sizes and how you'd make it work for you?

Bluntness100 · 09/07/2017 14:04

I think if you don't count the attic and the conservatory, it's only 1700 sq foot. Originally two bedrooms and a box room?

specialsubject · 09/07/2017 17:16

Depends on layout. If there are endless ensuites and silly little bedrooms, it won't feel big.

TheCrowFromBelow · 09/07/2017 17:59

How many of you? The family room could also be used as a guest room, and bed 4 an office.
I like the layout, and no it isn't small. Beds 2 & 3 are both a good size. Much better to have a house that works on a day to day basis rather than one that's amazing for the one week of the year you have guests!

unikorn · 09/07/2017 18:13

Four of us. The kids are 3 and 7. Well put a double sofa bed in the family room and a single bed in the box room.

"Only 1700 sq ft"
"1700 sq ft...felt very small"

I know this is just canvassing for opinion but really some people seem to have a very skewed sense of things. The average size of a detached house in the UK is 1500 sq ft, for a semi it is about 1000 sq ft. Saying that a house that is considerably above average size is small is nonsense.

Changednamejustincase · 09/07/2017 20:39

Our house is 1960 sq ft. We moved 2 years ago from a 1000 sq ft semi and I still marvel every day at how much space we have. There are 5 of us. It will feel big. It is big.

BubblesBuddy · 09/07/2017 20:59

This house looks to have the garage converted and lots of narrow rooms. It would not be my optimum layout. It's quite a lot of sq ft but possibly feels pokey and not spacious. I like fewer flowing, but zoned, spaces.

Ridingthegravytrain · 09/07/2017 21:03

2000sq ft over 3 floors gives a smaller footprint so less living space downstairs

Spread over 2 floors would feel bigger

I say this as someone living in a house like yours
