Can you store books, clothes, furniture in a garage?

I nead to store a lot of household goods while we've having building work done. I've access to a loft and a garage but have never used a garage before for storage (except for a car!). Can you store books, clothes, furniture in a garage?

Is the garage dry and free from damp? That's really what you need, a dry place that won't get wet or damp or mouldy. You don't want anything getting damp or condensation-y because then things will get mouldy. I guess you don't really want anything to get faded from direct sunlight either. You could put a heater in a garage I suppose (to keep the damp away) but that would be a fire hazard too.

For how long?

I've done that.
It was for a few weeks in the summer. It was ok.

Anything impermeable, so kitchen equipment, wooden furniture, plastic toys, is fine to go in a garage. Just protect from dust and clean it when it comes back into the house.

Stuff that can absorb moisture like mattresses, soft furnishings, books and clothes is more risky.
If it's only for a few months and your garage isn't completely open to the elements I would box everything up in cardboard boxes which will absorb the damp during storage and can then be thrown away at the end. Put a barrier (binbag) in the base of the box and label everything clearly. Plastic sheeting on the floor would also avoid rising moisture.

Voice of experience. We've had some sort of house move 10 times in 22 years!

Unfortunately it's probably for a year. I'm not sure of the condition of the garage because I've not seen it yet.

It sounds as though I'll have to cherry pick what goes in the garage. That wouldn't be so bad if I hadn't already filled the loft and run out of space! Hmm

Most garages will get mice at some point, in addition to the other hazards. They will wreck soft stuff, books etc.

You also need to think of insurance. If it is worth storing, it is worth doing properly.

There is a gig economy site rent my loft or something like that, but again check conditions. Otherwise it is proper storage and proper money.

I forgot to say, it's in a block of garages with no power so I can't heat it.

Thanks for that special I'll have a look. Unfortunately budget definitely won't stretch to proper storage

Appreciate that, it is very pricey.

Ask round friends and dispose of as much as possible. Kids toys, books, clothes can all be greatly reduced. If you dont need it for a year you dont need it!
