Transom windows (above internal doorways) - can I make them look nice?

The glass of ours have been painted over by the previous owner and they look hideous, some have got plasterboard instead. I wanted to board over them or something and make them go away or something but I am just wondering if we could make them presentable somehow.

Anyone made theirs look ok? Photos would be appreciated please if anyone has any! Ours just scream eighties at me!

I know of several people who have used stained glass to either have a stained glass window put in above the door, or had the original glass mosaiced over so that it has the effect of stained glass. They look fabulous!

You could divide them into smaller panels so they are less eighties and more deco?

Thanks both. Neither DH or I are into elaborate design so I don't think stained glass would work in this age house for us. I like that intransige, but we don't have as much space to play with. They are so bloody ugly at the moment! This one is actually one of the ones that is in better condition.

You can get reclaimed ones from eBay etc as an alternative?

Either paint the flat part or wallpaper it in the same colour as the room and they will, hopefully, disappear.....

or

Put a long thing painting up there. Buy canvases of the right size and hang over the shape to disguise. You could paint them yourself!

Our plasterer boarded both sides with plaster board & plastered over them. They just look like a continuation of the wall.Been done over 20 years.

I think it's nice to have the light. We got opaque glass from a local glazier cut to the right side, pulled the heading off carefully, new glass in, beading back on, painted.

Cheap and easy.

SingaporeSlander · 08/07/2017 00:27

Should read beading off!

PippaFawcett · 08/07/2017 08:07

Going to, I think that would be my preference.

They are totally shit. Who wants light from the landing/bathroom coming into your bedroom??

PippaFawcett · 08/07/2017 09:03

Do you have any before and after photos, Hipster?

For a front door I'd go with galass.

We have sandblasted with our house number in clear so people can see the number easily from the street.

If they are internal doors I think I'd plaster them too.
