Architect cost - how much?!

We want to do get a small extension (10sqm) to extend our kitchen. It is very straightforward, an infill extension to square off the house.
Had an architect in and she quoted nearly 3K to draw up all the plans! Is this normal and is it worth getting a few more quoted? Obviously we well get more quotes, but wondering whether they will all be roughly the same.

TIA!

That seems very expensive, we have used an architect to get plans drawn up of large 2 storey extension, to get the plans done & get it through planning hasn't cost us 3k (but getting on that way) & we are in the Home Counties, so not cheap!

Do you need an architect, could you use a plan drawer?

If you have a decent builder he/she should be able to do the plans.
DH does for all his customers.

I would get some more quotes. We paid £1,500 for an architect to draw up plans for a rear extension so £3,000 seems quite high.

I'd say that's expensive. We're having a relatively straightforward extension, but it's double storey and 60sqm. Ours cost around £2.5k and we're in 'name your price' London.

I've just had plans for a big-ish (7m x 3m) side extension drawn up. Cost £350 including 3x steel calculations (structural walls being removed) and working plans for the builders to use and submitting to planning. The planning fee was £172 on top of this. I'm in the South East.

I had issues finding someone to do the plans for a reasonable cost, my extension is a simple rectangle, no complex design needed etc. I called local builders and said I needed "bog standard simple" plans drawn up, not fluffy/pretty designy architect ones. The builders recommended people who would do that, and that's how I found the person who did my plans.

I wouldn't pay 3k!

Thanks. That's reassuring to know that it can be done cheaper.

The builder is a neighbour, and he gave me a few architect contacts, didn't offer to draw up plans himself.
In fact one of the architects he recommended was the same one we had a month ago and quoted that 3K figure!
We are in the North West.

fluffy/pretty designy architect one This is exactly the kind of architect she was. She was going to charge £350 for a "concept workshop", £1200 for the plan for the builders and another £1300ish for building regs drawings.

OP - the £1,500 we paid covered all consultations we had along with plans for the builders and building regs so £3,000 being quoted to you does seem too much.

Not sure which planet you are all living on but we just paid our architect £5k (Surrey) but he has done a smashing job with his vision and I'm chuffed.
