Incomplete jobs

Hi

I had alot of work done to the front exterior of my house last summer which continued to winter. The builder left a few incompete job and promised to return on spring this year to complete the job when the weather had improved. The outstanding job left remaining is to complete the painting and sealing of the window and some rendering.
I have paid most of the money as he had completed other jobs as well.

I have contacted him on April this year without any joy.
I have contacted him numerous times and he usually avoids my call. On the occasion he answered my texts he claimed he is off work and has not returned to work. He has promised to contact me on a certain date when he returned to work but he never did.

Is there anything left I can do ?
Furthermore how can I write the company an online review expressing my experience.
His website doesn't list any address.

Feel like a prized plum here ...:(

have you got an actual company name? "Acme Builders Ltd?"

or just "G Grimaldi, builder?"

you can look up companies on Companies House (only use the ,gov.uk site, others are scams) as well as Directors by name and approximate location.

I have a feeling that the amount you have paid him means that the amount remaining makes the work remaining unprofitable and he doesn't want to come back.

Recommendation sites are mostly adverts paid for by the tradesman, and are surprisingly reluctant to post unfavourable reviews.

Google "recommendationwebsitename complaints" for something interesting.

Their solicitors monitor forums (including this one) for any unfavourable comment and MN will get a(nother) solicitors letter if you say anything critical identifying them.

Hi pigletjohn thanks for your reply.
I have just looked up the company and found it on the above link.

I agree it isn't profitable for him to return and complete the work and hence the no show.

I'm now having to get other tradespeople to complete the job and will have to spend more money and further time on this.

Is there anything I can do??!!

I suppose you could sue him.

Not likely to do you much good.

Start with a formal letter to his registered address.

When speaking to him, never smile, laugh or apologise.

Assuming you have a contract that he's not fulfilling, write to him, giving him say 14 days to complete t he works for the monies due or you will take further steps. If he does nothing, get a quote from someone else, send it to him and say that unless he completes the job in 14 days, you will proceed with the other quote and look to recover the difference from him through though the small claims court on the basis of non-performance of contractual obligation

Thanks for replies. I have lot of other work that needs to be done to my house. I am not looking forward to working with builders. It seems the nicer you are to them the more you get taken advantage of :(

I agree. We've probably got 1.5-2 days of outstanding work needed. However, we have many tools and £5k of the money we owe them. They on the other hand have a front door key....
