Bizarre! I've looked at both of those houses online and really like the second one! Maybe it's a sign?

Cartmel has no community

My mum would beg to differ - she lived there for years and found exactly the opposite. Maybe it's what you make it.

Been through ulverston and really liked it - they seem to have lots of little festivals on during the year, and nice independent shops

Notmyrealname85 · 06/07/2017 11:45

We went years ago to a place called the Shop Floor Project (v cool shop) and had tea at somewhere called Gillams (gorgeous cheese). Was told there was a great tapas place?

Anyway for Ulverston www.localstore.co.uk/s/202/ulverston/

Gilliams is gorgeous. You could eat somewhere different every day for weeks in Ulverston and not be disappointed.
Cinema is brilliant too, still has an ice cream interval!

Tatter Does your mum have young children?.... I'm thinking from a family of young children's perspective. I certainly bet that there's a community of older residents, but there are very few children in the village, some of which go to a different school and many of the school pupils at Cartmel come from surrounding villages.

Moved here in 2009. It really depends on your expectations. You will not find any big retail areas (even Carlisle as the city ) does not have the amount of shops many expect as a minimum. Try to look within 15-20 miles of so of your workplace as getting around can be a pain. Think about doctors, dentists, public transport and obviously schools and activities for children. Penrith, Cockermouth are both nice. Dalston which is just outside Carlisle is good but not as much going on as the the former two and smaller. We rented before buying to get a feel of living in the area we thought we would want to live in - in the end we did not buy there !

Never no, she was middle aged. Her neighbour and friend had a youngish child and was very happy there, but I appreciate that things are different when you've got young kids.

Name change fail! I was Tatter, Never.

Where are you looking at working?

kamilamonica · 14/08/2018 22:37

Hello, can anyone recommend some estate agency in Cumbria? We want to move up from Surrey but can’t find much on rightmove. We want to start with a rented 3-4 bedroom house to see how it goes.
We have two children 7 and 5. We want peace but not isolation.
Working from home but need easy acces to an international airport.
Will apreciate all advises. Thank you.

Scotmum83 · 15/08/2018 12:39

We lived and worked in barrow for a few years, although not technically the lakes. We felt really remote so if we had to move back again I would stay somewhere closer to the motorway like Kendal or Penrith as it was always a bit of a trek to get back to civilisation lol. If your outdoorsy you’d love it but if you like theatre, arts, nice restaurants etc you might want to avoid as far as cockermouth, ulverston etc. As you will have to travel to find these things.

RandomMess · 15/08/2018 13:54

How far in travel time do you want to be from an international Airport?

Nice parts of Lancashire may be better?

Estate Agents up here are NOTHING like the ones in Surrey IME!

kamilamonica · 16/08/2018 00:27

Up to two hours from airport is fine. I just noticed those agents are not very responsive lol

kamilamonica · 16/08/2018 00:30

Thanks for that. You are absolutely right about civilization. Its a bit too wild! Also noticed there are not many secondary schools on the coast. And we need fast broadband...

RandomMess · 16/08/2018 01:07

Well Kendal sounds like a good option from the info you've given. I think you will just have to phone and nag the estate agents!!!

Only one out of the 7 or so we dealt with when viewing ever asked enough to find out we were potential cash buyers Confused

thecatsthecats · 16/08/2018 11:30

I grew up near Staveley, a good place especially for older kids as there are a huge number of businesses there offering casual work.

Friends also live in Holme, south of Kendal and love it.

SunnyUpNorth · 09/11/2018 21:44

If any of the previous posters are still around, could you let me know your thoughts on Burneside near Kendal?

We have seen a house there we really like for a holiday home. We love the Lake District and have wanted a holiday home for a while but the places we know (usual tourist areas) are so expensive. Stumbled across the villages around Kendal and seem like a really good compromise being near both the lakes and the dales, near civilisation but lots of nice countryside nearby etc. We would want to use it ourselves but would need to rent it out a bit too to cover costs. Would Burneside be an ok place for that? I also love how it has the train link to the lakes.
