Removing beading from window pane

How can I make this easier? It's stuck on with thick double sided tape. I've had some success with a Stanley blade and meths but it's not coming off easily. I've half done one window so there's no turning back now!

Why are you doing it?

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 03/07/2017 09:23

you just need to prise it off...narrow strong flat bladed knife and keep at it.
tape for fixing is really weird....it's normally nailed with teeny tiny tacks

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 03/07/2017 09:24

Agree - why are you doing it?!

fluorine19 · 03/07/2017 09:25

Your best bet for removing beading is a wide-bladed stripping knife - the sort of thing used for removing wallpaper. If it's difficult to remove, due to the double sided tape, you may find using a chisel (in addition to the knife) will help.

I'm doing it for a few reasons, moisture gathers behind it and goes all green, two fell off by themselves and I thought the windows looked better without and also makes them easier to clean.

I can't make it out. Is it a wooden window, or plastic? Is it double-glazed?

How is the beading attached?

It has obscure glass. is it a bathroom? Does it suffer condensation? Does the extractor fan work?

minniemoi · 03/07/2017 18:42

That's the bathroom window for an example.
Double glazed UPVC. No condensation inside, the mouldy stuff is outside. Managed to get one window done but the methylated spirit isn't great for taking the stickiness off, is there anything else I could try?

beading is usually to stop the glass falling out.

Am concerned you are removing yours.

wowfudge · 03/07/2017 19:28

That is exactly why I asked the question - the beading isn't only decorative; it serves a purpose. It's not supposed to come off.

minniemoi · 03/07/2017 20:46

Quite a few of the neighbours have removed it. It is only plastic stuck on, would this still be intended to hold the glass in? Shock a couple had already fallen off themselves.

It's attached with double sided tape.

I'm with the 'I thought the beading was there to hold the glass in' gang.

Happy to be proved wrong, though - never too old to learn etc.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 03/07/2017 21:49

Yes - agree. I thought beading was functional. Also agree with checking ventilation etc if there is mould

minniemoi · 03/07/2017 22:29

Maybe beading is the wrong word as beading is used to hold glass in.
They are like stick on plastic dividers that separate the single pane into 2. There's one on each side of glass.
The mould is from when it rains/is damp outside and the moisture gets behind and you can't scrub it off. There's no mould inside so nothing to do with ventilation.

Is it an astragal bar? Stuck on to the glass to give the impression of multiple panes?

wowfudge · 04/07/2017 09:55

Now the photo makes more sense - that horizontal bar is not the window beading; it is an astragal bar. Use white spirit or Sticky Stuff Remover or WD40 to remove the glue.

Thankyou everyone.
