Kitchen island-yay/nay, any regrets or tips?

Just that really-I've always been kind of against them as see them as being in the way but kitchen designer says would be good in our space & they get used & congregated around a lot.

I'd ideally like something similar on wheels that I could move out of the way if I wanted. Granted I'm not sure when Id ever need to move it, but on occasions when I want to flamboyantly dance around the whole area unimpeded, surely it's a good option?!

We're knocking down a wall between kitchen/diner so here's a badly drawn diagram of the space. L shape kitchen on right & adjoining far wall & dining table by patio doors in left bit of the room.

Interesting to see how everyone uses them
It's also great for folding laundry. We have all king or super king size linens and my little arms can't cope, but the big flat surface makes it easy.

I'm also lucky enough to have a big pantry, so don't need the storage
Our kitchen has a larder and a utility room off, but I like to have all the big pots, pans and equipment close to where I use them in the kitchen.

To be fair though, it's also personal taste. I like big and spacious rooms but I don't like loads of empty floor space to wander across. To me it's a waste, without any purpose, whereas others enjoy it for its own sake.

I don't like them at all, they look clumpy and ugly and I think will be very outdated in a few years' time.

I have one. It is always full of crap. Just another dumping ground.

I've just had my kitchen done and decided no island.

As i have a sofa and a big table, architect pointed out how much seating do you need?
I'm glad i didn't now as it would have really broken up the space. I didnt need it though to house anything so i understand why you would.

Top tip is to mark all your furniture out on the floor and the island and see how you would walk around it all.
