Fire door

We've been told we need to fit a new front door (flat in small block) to comply with fire safety regulations but our managing agents are quoting £1000 to supply and fit one for us. They say we can arrange it ourselves if we'd prefer. So does anyone know anything about this? Where can we get one - any recommendations? And any idea how much is reasonable? £1000 seems extortionate for a front door. Thank you.

You could find a second hand one much cheaper on eBay or the free ads.

You can easily put a door in yourself with little experience.

As long as it meets spec your are good.

£1,000? Ha ha ha.

Allow £150 for a chippy to fit it, the same for a painter, and less than that for hinges, locks etc.

Looks like the agents are saving up for a new yacht.

Is that the price of a gold plated one?

The "S" suffix on "FD30S" appears to relate to cold smoke seal.

My newer ones have a furry pile strip on the intumescent seal, you would think it was draught strip and it cuts noise penetration, but it is designed to keep smoke out.

Various widths are available, it is usually fitted into a groove in the door lining (frame). Fire doors are heavy and have a more substantial lining than most.

The strip, and FD hinges, pads etc, can be seen here

I like the PVD brass lift-off fire hinges, because these heavy doors are difficult to take of for redecoration otherwise. They are also available in stainless to suit your knobs and handles.

A professional chippy should be used to the process, as they are used in shops, offices, hotels, HMOs and three-storey houses everywhere.

First thing is to get a recommended local chippy who will know local suppliers, measure up and make recommendations before you buy. Chek er tread is a paid-for advertising site. Personal recommendation better.

That's so helpful PigletJohn. Thank you very much for your advice.
