Cost for decorator

We are in the process of having our loft converted. The company have quoted for decoration to include prep and painting of woodwork, primer and walls etc. It is a master bedroom with ensuite. I'd say max 5x3m2. The ensuite is mostly tiled so minimum painting there. Am I justified in being horrified at a quote if close to 2k for this?

Blimey! YANBU!!! We paid 300 quid for our 5x4m2 living room, including all you mention, and our woodwork was in a terrible state. And i thought that was pricey!

On average £100-150 a day + cost of paint so that's 2-3 days work I'd say. £2k is ridiculous, definitely get more quotes!

Yes that seems excessive. A basic decorator costs around £100 a day or a good one is £150 a day in Greater London. Price of materials for the room will be £100 ish for basic trade emulsions, primer, filler etc. I would say something like that could take 4 days tops. But beware that decorating can also be a how long is a piece of string thing. Some decorators want to get the plaster just right (and depending on who did the plastering it might be quite rough) , so if you are fussy you could easily spend that £2k..So it depends on the finish you want really. I go for good but not amazing (got young kids in an older house so it doesn't matter). Might be better to get a quote from an independent guy from myBuilder or something.

Depends where you are I guess. It seems high but having recently painted a loft conversion ourselves it's a long job! I think I paid someone £500 just to do a double height stairwell. Washcoat and topcoats. No woodwork.

If you are starting from bare plaster and plain wood skirting boards. that is a lot of work. I think Day rate here is probably nearer the £200 side of £150 than £100.

Toomanycats99 · 28/06/2017 20:47

However I would say that the loft company priced high for extras so a third party will probably be a cheaper option.

HipsterHunter · 28/06/2017 20:53

£2k is crazy for one room by I reckon it is a week work if you're starting from bare plaster so up to £800 not out of line.

Thanks will definitely get some quotes in

Does that include taping of the
Plasterboard or just straight painting? Seems expensive if no taping

HelenofToys · 29/06/2017 07:52

We paid £1500 for a hall/stairs/landing and 10 doors!

You are definitely right to get other quotes!

twatchops · 29/06/2017 23:03

We're paying £1k for a 40 m room of bare plaster and primed woodwork and oiling of 5 internal doors....

PigletJohn · 29/06/2017 23:55

I'd guess that the loft company are planning to get in a subcontractor at £100/day and pocket the difference.

GotToGetMyFingerOut · 30/06/2017 00:07

That's huge my husband's got his own decorating business and bus jaw dropped open.

SarahBeeney · 30/06/2017 00:08

We are at the painting stage of our loft and I think we will have to do it ourselves. Dreading it to be honest!Might get someone in to do the tall bit above the stairs though.
Good luck with the quotes!

Just make sure whoever you choose has insurance and get a copy of their current certificate to check it's valid! We went with the cheapest of 2 quotes and the guy was negligent causing several £000 of damage! His insurers have paid, but there's no compensation for the stress!
