Is this price reasonable for replastering & decorating 2 bedrooms?

We're due to have two medium-sized bedrooms in our 1930s house replastered (walls and ceilings; ceilings are a cracked mess) and then painted (walls, ceilings & woodwork). The price we were quoted for this was £500 per room which we thought seemed reasonable for the amount of work involved so we accepted the quote, but we're pretty clueless about how much these things are meant to cost.
DP's dad is now saying 'you're being ripped off, my mate's a plasterer, he can do that for you for half the price' etc etc...
So just wondering if that price is about right or way too high? (We're in the north-east)
Thanks Smile

I think that seems reasonable. We had two bedrooms plastered and they were in a really bad state and it took 4 days. Cost £800 in total without painting, decorating costs here are £150 a day so would Have been over what you have been quoted. I'm in Gloucestershire so relatively mid range prices.

Thanks Peaches, that's reassuring Smile

People always say they can get it done cheaper - but if you actually asked the person they reckon could do it cheaper I bet they couldn't!

Yes that's what we were thinking too!

That's a great price. You are lucky to find a plasterer with availability as well!

EpoxyResin · 27/06/2017 20:36

Where I come from that's bloody good with all the painting in as well!

RoseVase2010 · 27/06/2017 20:37

That sounds like a great price!

CocoaLeaves · 27/06/2017 20:39

That is reasonable, yes, I have had all the rooms in my house plastered, but I did the painting myself, what you have been quoted sounds fine to me.

Thanks so much for all the replies, feeling loads better now, DP's dad had us really worried! Smile

Reasonable. This article is which? And was published five years ago

It reflects that with inflation and painting- you're paying fair price (and a good job, monkeys and peanuts)

Herschellmum · 27/06/2017 21:31

That's a fabulous price!

It's a good price. I make a rule not to accept 'favours' when someone tries to strong-arm me into using their mate/cousin/son/random acquaintance. Invariably it's either not cheaper - which leads to an awkward conversation about price. Or it is cheaper but you're getting what you pay for - which is shoddy work that is difficult to complain about because they are a 'family friend' or similar.

Go with an unconnected professional. That way there is no chance of feeling like you can't specify what you want - or raise snagging issues with them. Whereas if you use the 'family friend' you run the risk of it turning into a gossip-fest where they slate you to all and sundry for being fussy/demanding/a nightmare to work for.
