Hi there,

My MIL is wanting to have some work done on her house, bespoke storage, wardrobes and a garage refit. Shes asked around neighbours for recommendations but hasnt had much luck, half the people dont turn up or havent got back to her. Im dubious about looking on fb and I know the days of looking in the yellow pages/local newspaper are long gone. So can I ask for recommendations of where to look for reliable carpenters and tradesmen? Are there any good websites I can look on for her or local listing pages etc?

TIA

Try Bark.com
It is how we have found local tradesmen and have never had any problems.

Try the local timber merchants - they will have regular customers who they know and they may even have a pinboard of cards on display. Alternatively we have had some success with Rated People. The tradespeople registered on there have to pay to buy the opportunity to quote on your job so there is an incentive for them to turn up at least. We found a gardener and a tiler that way.

www.checkatrade.com- really accurate!

Check a trade and My Builder websites both good for reviews.

Haha haha
Hahaha.

Ha.

A reliable tradesman?!

monkeyfacegrace · 23/06/2017 20:48

Oh, and don't use ratedpeople. I did that, thinking the same as pp, if they pay for your job they must be serious....

But what I've since learnt is that buying work means they aren't busy enough which raises the question of why!!

I've had good experiences with check a trade

Looking on here CheckaTrade seems to attract some criticism (reviews coming from friends/family and bad ones allegedly being removed). That said, we've only had good experiences so far. A great sash window fitter, good brickie, efficient rubbish clearer and now a good builder. I tend to look for the number of reviews, ones that seem as realistic as possible (with specific detail) and being trading standards approved is a bonus.
