My builders keep blocking my neighbours drive...

Like, all the time. And lots of different tradesmen. The first person who did it (the plasterer) I was out all day and didn't know, when I got home I told him he was going to get a ticket and he moved. (I didn't know what else to say as he clearly wasn't concerned about parking there!)

The next people were our window fitters, and I said a few times that the lady next door would be coming back, but their English wasn't great.

Now it's our bathroom fitters, they speak no English At All and clearly don't care they've blocked her drive. (And I find them really intimidating..)

I feel terrible. Shall I take her wine?? Feels stupid to take wine while the van is still parked there Confused

I should say, I don't have a drive, I'm waiting for my kerb to be dropped. And I live opposite a school so there isn't a space to be had!

They are working for you, can you not bring yourself to point to the dropped kerb and make 'move' gestures? I am sure they would understand the basics if you said it.

specialsubject · 20/06/2017 17:19

Google translate should sort it.

Branleuse · 20/06/2017 17:36

I would think that taking your neighbour some wine and an apology would be really nice.

ChicRock · 20/06/2017 17:39

English speaking or not - get them to move their van.

A bottle of wine and a "sorry... but I'm not actually going to do anything about it" is a shit apology.

I didn't hire them... we had quotes and hired another guy for everything, they all work for him.

They literally don't engage with me at all. They don't care they're blocking her drive.

Are these all sub contractors? If they are you need to speak to the main builder and tell him that he needs to make sure that anyone working on your house does not park over the neighbours drive. If it's someone you've arranged yourself then you must make it clear to them.

As to your neighbour I would drop her a note apologising for any disruption your work is causing and giving your phone number to call if there are any issues at all. Then when everything is done take her flowers/wine.

First, speak to the neighbour.

I'd offer to put my car in front of her drive and ask her to put my number on speedial so I could run out and start it whenever she wanted to go or come.

When I have people here (scaffolders are the worst) I move all my vehicles to another street and show them where to park. I also asked the neighbours what time they go to work, one of them left ten minutes early so he would be gone by the time they arrived.

Don't put the kettle on until they have parked appropriately.

JT05 · 20/06/2017 19:31

Get them to park elsewhere and definitely apologise with flowers/ wine/ chocs.
We has this for months. The only way to stop them was to get up early and park across my own drive. Ok until I had to go out!

RiverTam · 20/06/2017 19:32

You have a very strong word with your contractor, he can pass the message on.

I can't stress how crap it is living next door to people getting a lot of work on their house done. We've had it twice next door. At the end of weeks or months of hell they get their swan my dream house, we get a bottle of cheap plonk. So you absolutely need to get this sorted asap and obviously get your neighbours something a lot better than wine from Tesco's really good.

nocampinghere · 20/06/2017 19:32

where CAN they park?

BangkokBlues · 20/06/2017 19:49

How did you think parking for numerous trade vans all needing to unload heavy stuff was going to work?

If parking is a nightmare you should have thought about it in advance!

Can you look on yourparkingspace.com and see if anyone is renting out their driveway near by?

Can you 'save' a space with your car on the road by your house and move it when the contractors come?
