What do you store in your utility room?

We are just about to double the size of our utility room - and lose a bit of porch space. I am having an initial thought about units etc. and what we will want to fit in there. So far I have.

Washer/tumbler
Fridge freezer
drying rack
scooters
spare car seats
cupboard for ironing board, hoover etc
cupboard for wellies and coats
lots of wine

what haven't I thought of?

is going to be 6m by 3m so pretty big and lots of options.

also - what flooring do you have?

Thanks!!

A friend has a shower in her utility room . With 4 sports mad teenagers it's a brilliant idea . They go straight into the utility room , undress and shower and don't trail mud through the house . I wish I had thought of it when we did ours .

Madbengalmum · 18/06/2017 15:47

Tobuyornot99 · 18/06/2017 15:50

Laundry baskets / pegs / clothes airers
Laundry products
Small DIY kit (few screwdrivers / WD40 etc)
Excess products (e.g. loo rolls etc after a bulk shop)
Kitchen gadgets (slow cooker / actifry / magi mix)
Cake stands / presentation crockery that's rarely use
Coat stand / shoe rack
general junk that doesn't have its own home

knaffedoff · 18/06/2017 15:55

We include medicines as generally the room holds washing powders/ cleaning products and the room is locked to keep all the poisons safe x

Erinys · 18/06/2017 16:03

Lots and lots of storage.

We keep tins
bottles
canned goods (from when I pretend I'm domesticated)
outdoor stuff like bikes
the barbecue stuff
firelighters
Christmas tree/boxes of Christmas tree decorations/lights
pushchairs
dryer
chest freezer
microwave
ice cream maker
yogurt maker
dehydrator (the kitchen stuff which doesn't get used every day)
All dh's tools, nails, pins etc
cleaning stuff
Kite
Wellies

chipscheeseandgravy · 18/06/2017 16:08

Dp's (unused) fishing equipment.
Tumble dryer
Washing machine
Gardening bits
We also had a sink (handy when you've been in the garden!)
Shoes
Coats/jacket
General junk that didn't make it to the garage.
Couple of cupboards which housed the overflow from the kitchen cupboards. - so tinned bits and dry stuff.
We had a tile floor in ours (that's what the owners had put down). It was a godsend. Just sweep and mop. Wouldn't want wooden/laminate as it wouldn't be hard wearing enough and same goes for Lino.

Stopnamechanging · 18/06/2017 16:10

Do you have a dog? I have seen some utility rooms with dog showers in them. I am desperate for something like this when I get my dream utility room.

supadupapupascupa · 18/06/2017 16:10

we have a pantry that houses all the food, batteries, freezer, tupperware etc, so in our utitily we have a loo, basin, washer and tumbler. All the cleaning stuff, laundry stuff and medicines also. We have high ceilings and I want a high shelf to store baskets for hats, scarfs, sunglasses etc

bluechameleon · 18/06/2017 16:12

Mine isn't very big but it has a tumble dryer, washing machine and sink. We store cleaning products and equipment, wine, scooter and bike, buggies, coats, ironing board, bird seed, tools, batteries, shopping bags, laundry bins... I can't think of anything else.

bluechameleon · 18/06/2017 16:13

Oh, and we have laminate. That's what came with the house, if I was to do it myself I'd do lino.

BubblesBuddy · 18/06/2017 17:03

I tend to think of mine as a laundry room because I have a large kitchen. I would never put a fridge in it. Even a freezer might be annoying. These really should be in the kitchen because they are associated with cooking.

I have a stacked washer with dryer on top. Deep laundry sink with plumbed in draining board. Work surface with wine fridge under. Above this there are open boxes for laundry for each of us. So socks, underwear etc get sorted for each household member.

The opposite wall has a tall cupboard for brooms, iron, ironing board and cleaning equipment. There are top cupboards for dusters, shopping bags, etc. and these have a hanging rail underneath for shirts, t shirts etc. There is a work surface and beneath that there are drawers for light bulbs, candles and batteries and below them, sitting on the floor, two baskets for recycling paper and the other for welly boots. I quite fancied a dog shower but he is a small dog and stands in the sink!

Millybingbong · 18/06/2017 18:50

This is really helpful thanks!
Kids bikes is a good one. I had forgotten those guys

our kitchen is pretty big too and I am somewhat of a minimalist so there is no need for endless tupperware and pantry items here.

Tool drawers is a yes, and some general crap like batteries and lightbulbs but again we dont have too many.

I'm working on a plan now.

is it wanky to have a feature wall in in a utility room??

Wall cupboards - one for tinned food, pasta etc, one for baking things, so flours and sugars etc and one for household things like shower gel, washing liquid, light bulbs etc. Then spare freezer, tumble drier and washing machine under worktop. Microwave on top of worktop as it's not used much as well as small beer/wine fridge. We have oak flooring but have laminate on top in the utility as DDog gets very muddy.
Would so love a DDog shower!

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 18/06/2017 19:02

I have a cupboard for all baking tins/trays etc.
Also a cupboard for vases.

Mistletoekids · 18/06/2017 19:08

Pram depending on ages of kids

MrTumblesbitch · 18/06/2017 19:09

I love my utility room! I have:

Downstairs loo
Washing machine / tumble dryer with bench over top and an ironing board over that.
Spare sink (so useful!)
Hanging rail and chest of drawers - I iron uniform and hang it straight up here in sets, so it's organised for the week.
Kids bikes
Wellies
Cupboards with vases / kids paints kits / tools / Tupperware etc in.
Alcohol Grin

SpearmintTea · 19/06/2017 09:20

Washing machine / tumble dryer with bench over top and an ironing board over that. do you need to be tall for that to work? I'm getting my tape measure out to see if that could work for us!

MrTumblesbitch · 19/06/2017 09:31

I'm only 5ft 2! It was meant to be inlaid but I was broke decided not to, so got the ones that fold down from the wall instead to go over the top. I love it so much!

Sunnyshores · 19/06/2017 15:23

I think my utility should be bigger than the kitchen.

Its a downstairs loo, shower, laundry room, storage for coats, shoes, endless small kitchen appliances I never use, hoover, cleaning equipment, bulk pet foods, wine, sports eqpt.
