Where to live near Manchester airport?

I’m looking for advice about areas to live near Manchester airport. We want to be no more than 30 mins from the airport, ideally south of the airport to be closer to family (Midlands).

The things we love about where we live now are being able to walk into town (market town - size 23,000) and the convenience of being close to shops, nice places to eat and drink and activities for our DD. We are also lucky to be close to nice open spaces. Medium term we will want good schools (DD is 2.5).

We don’t know a lot about the area so any advice about where to start our search would be helpful.

Poynton is lovely, lots going on, nice cafes and bars, great for kids and good schools. Close to countryside and airport.

I don't live there but have friends who do and wish i did!

My sil lives in cheadle which is lovely though expensive

Can you give us an idea of budget???

I live in Didsbury. 10 mins from the airport, South Manchester. Lovely area with lots of nice eateries etc. Excellent schools.

You will pay to live here though- we managed to get our home for an absolute steal as a) it was a repossession and b) DH brought it 20 years ago. Realistically it's probably worth about 650/700k and it's far from the biggest in the area.

I have lived in:
Macclesfield (30 mins by car)
Wilmslow (15 mins by car)

and have have very good experiences.

Altrincham / Hale / Bowdon. Masses to do for children, Altrincham (sounds like the market town you're describing) within walking distance with lots of restaurants / bars / market / shopping. The high street in Hale village has restaurants, bars, independent shops too. Some of the best state schools in the country (at primary and secondary). Dunham on your doorstep (a national trust property with glorious gardens). Train and tram in Altrincham, train from Hale.

But it doesn't come cheap.

We live just in Derbyshire. There's a regular bus service that runs something like 20 hours a day linking Buxton to Manchester Airport and a railway station. I'd suggest Disley in Cheshire, though it's a large village rather than a town, New Mills, Whaley Bridge and Chapel en le Frith. It's a beautiful area with lots of stone built houses and an industrial past, but within 5 minutes you can be out in the fields with sheep and cows for company or walking along the river bank or canal towpath.

Manchester is a short train journey away for nights out in the city and the Trafford Centre is around a 30 minute drive away.

wowfudge · 18/06/2017 16:07

Oh and Bollington which is between Poynton and Macclesfield is a lovely place.

HollyHx · 18/06/2017 17:01

Thank you! This is really, really helpful.

Budget will be 600k. We live in a relatively expensive place in the south at the moment and I was hoping we'd get more for our money but it doesn't sound like that will be the case!

You would get a lovely house for that budget in many of the areas listed above. If you don't want very close to countryside you could look at Chorlton.

alltouchedout · 18/06/2017 18:15

Cheadle is lovely and your budget would be fine.

BringMeTea · 18/06/2017 18:23

Or Congleton. 31 mins to airport.

I second everywhere @wowfudge has mentioned. I love Disley and Buxton in particular but there is no secondary school in Dudley, but a bus to poynton.
High lane is nice too, as is high peak. Hazel grove is ok too. Depending on budget, I think it's slightly cheaper to rent there perhaps? ( don't quote me!)

They're doing the New A6 road though at the moment and that's going to make it really easy for everyone to get to the airport!

All the best.

Ps if you move to disley, the Italian is Fab, and so is the ramshead by the station.
If you go to Buxton there's a pub in the open glass bit by the gardens and that's great too!

Flamingoprincess1212 · 18/06/2017 18:37

Disley not Dudley

notangelinajolie · 18/06/2017 18:41

Altrincham area. Altrincham is a market town with all the amenities and transport links you could wish for. Look at Hale or if budget is limited Timperley. Trafford has the best schools.

Second to that look at Knutsford (small town) and Lymm (village) are lovely but transport links are more limited. Didsbury does have good transport links but is more urban but not all parts of Didsbury are nice. Also, bear in mind these three are not in Trafford and you will be out of catchment for the Grammar Schools.

Girlsworld92 · 18/06/2017 18:44

I live in Timperley which is next to Altrincham. 15 mins from airport, good links to Manchester on the trams & good links to motorway. Nice little community, good schools. You'd get something decent for that budget.
Stockton Heath and Appleton around Warrington are nice.
If you want more rural try the areas around Culceth and Croft. Bit further out but lovely.

HollyHx · 18/06/2017 20:07

This is brilliant, thanks everyone. We're going to explore in a few weeks and these will all be on our list.

If you like Timperley/Altrincham/Hale/Sale and have any questions you are welcome to message me. Good luck with the search x

loveka · 19/06/2017 21:38

Styal.

AddALemon · 19/06/2017 21:45

Styal, wilmslow, handforth, cheadle Hulme, heald green, the outskirts of wythenshawe (where it meets styal and where it meets heald green ) poynton is lovely, mega family friendly, lovely schools.

FavouriteWasteofSlime · 19/06/2017 21:46

Knutsford?

Launderetta · 19/06/2017 21:56

I thought of Knutsford too, Favourite, I think it'd be pretty ideal.
Or you could go further west & across towards Lymm & Appleton, convenient for M56 direct to the airport.

FavouriteWasteofSlime · 20/06/2017 09:34

Knutsford is lovely, and affordable for your budget OP.
