Is this big enough for a breakfast area?

2.4m by 4m, to fit a table for 6 people comfortably? Would be open plan to the kitchen (3.6m by 4.5m).

I think we need a diagram Grin

It might be a bit of a squeeze - can seating be a bench against a wall on one side?

hiddenmnetter · 17/06/2017 21:14

If a table is about 1.2 wide it leaves 60cm either side to sit. That's a bit tight but workable. If it's open plan could you not move it into the kitchen space by another 30 or 40cm?

emsyj37 · 17/06/2017 21:14

What's that in old feet and inches?? We have a dining area with a 6ft x 3ft dining table which seats 6 comfortably and I'm pretty sure it's smaller than that.

Theknittinggorilla · 17/06/2017 21:21

Apologies, very poor of me not to provide a diagram! Layout attached. We would knock through the kitchen and utility (laundry goes upstairs). Loo would move to other side of kitchen (top of diagram). Yes could have a bench. Am considering table in the main kitchen against the wall but not sure what I would then put in the utility bit. Maybe larder cupboard and have a sofa? Any ideas welcome!

13ft by 7ft

You will be hard pressed to wiggle out of the chairs. You need space to push them back to extract yourself from the table. If you can get a long narrow table (800 mm wide) you will have 1600 so 800 mm to get out from the chairs as you push back. Mark it out with existing furniture and see if you can do it. An elderly person may struggle. I don't think it will be a good look as the room will feel very cramped.

Theknittinggorilla · 17/06/2017 21:24

That is my worry bubbles. Don't want it to look or feel cramped.

I think ours is about 11ft x 11ft so 7ft might be a squeeze although it depends on the orientation of the table etc.

PickAChew · 17/06/2017 21:34

I've seen plenty of houses with an entire "dining kitchen" no bigger than that.

hiddenmnetter · 17/06/2017 22:53

1.2m is 4'

If your table is 3' wide then that's probably enough space - that gives you nearly 1m either side of the table to sit, which should be ok.

So depends on the size of your table

PickAChew · 17/06/2017 23:42

Our dining room is just over 8' wide, btw. We have a massive round table, usually up against the wall, with a chest of drawers on the opposite wall, which brings the floor space down to under 7' wide. We need to put everything to the side as we walk through the dining room to get to the kitchen from the living room. If we pull the table out, a little, we can sit 5 people around, easily and 6 with a little more elbow clashing.

A narrow refectory style table should fit no problem. Will there always be 6 people using it, or will it push back when not in full use?

m0therofdragons · 18/06/2017 06:58

Mine is 2.18 wide by 3.76 and we comfortably fit 6 round our table but do have to get in in order and if the one at the end furthest from the door needs a wee then it's a bit of a squeeze to get out - kids can get through fine.

Totally outing myself but here you go

Is this big enough for a breakfast area?

Table is set up for 4 but we usually have a chair each end or extend table for 8 but it gives you an idea of the width.

HomeExtender · 18/06/2017 09:54

Have a look on Houseplanner as it shows you how much space is required for dining table & chairs - leave 76cm from edge of table to wall to allow people to take their seat (but it will be very tight if people get up during meal) ideal distance is 1.22m which allows people to come & go from table comfortably.

HomeExtender · 18/06/2017 09:57

Sorry pressed send too quickly! Could you do banquet seating with a bench against a wall?

EpoxyResin · 18/06/2017 10:56

Sounds like loads of room to me, but our breakfast area is 1.85m x 4m!
I guess it depends what you have in mind with "6 people" and what you intend by "comfortably". My 6 people are able-bodied adults and small children, all of slim build, and our "comfortably" means sitting on bench seating with no seat backs is 100% fine and dandy :)

Saying that until recently we had a full width dining table with 6 chairs with backs and that was far too big for the space, making it really awkward if we ever wanted to have people on both sides of the table. Benches that fit fully under a narrow-ish table is perfect for a narrow space if it's suitable for the intended users, so we've had one made to the exact dimensions for best fit.

5amisnotmorning · 18/06/2017 12:15

We did exactly the same thing except it is 3.2m wide. There is just enough room to get around the table at a squeeze when people are seated.

Theknittinggorilla · 18/06/2017 20:18

Thanks all. It's 5 people really, 2 adults and 3 small dc but we are planning to be here for a while so they will not always be small! Good to know it can work but will be tight. I think I need to mark it out in another room and see how tight it feels.

We could knock through to a big dining room instead but ideally I would like to keep an extra reception room. But don't want to end up with a too small space and regret not knocking through...
