Is this a reasonable price for curtains?

I know this might sound reasonable to some; I've found the perfect shade of Dusty Blush curtains from West Elm, however they're priced at £109.00 + £10.00 delivery!

I'm 23 and so very inexperienced in the matter of curtains, haha! I've only ever bought curtains twice. The first pair lasted a couple of years but did look a bit rugged during their last 8-9 months of life. The second I also used for 2-3 years and they were alright, not perfect really.

My questions are as follows;

  1. Do you think these curtains hang nicely?
  2. How much is it to dry clean curtains?
  3. Is this a reasonable price for what you're getting?

Thank you.

They look nice, order a swatch of the fabric (most curtain places will and them) to see what sort of quality it is. It seems a reasonable price for fully lined blackout curtains if the fabric is decent.

Price is ok for long curtains

They will hang fine if the length just touches the floor and not bunch up

HarrietSchulenberg · 11/06/2017 01:27

I'd only ever bought ready made curtains in packs for £20ish until I decided to make my own. The material alone cost me nearly £50, plus £20 for linings, then I had to make the fuckers. And they weren't floor length either.
So, yes, I'd say yours are good value and they look lovely.

caroldecker · 11/06/2017 01:49

depends on size, but generally curtains are a rip-off. dead easy to make as they are a rectangle and much cheaper.

wowfudge · 11/06/2017 08:17

I thought they sounded cheap - looking at the link, as they are eyelet curtains, there is less fabric than for pencil pleats. I don't understand how your previous curtains only last a couple of years; what did you do to them?!

We have curtains we've had for donkeys years. When they get replaced they become dust sheets.

VoteMe · 11/06/2017 09:33

They are fine. They are inoffensive and will hang ok. The fabric will probably be a bit cheap but it really won't notice.

The price is ok too.

Dunelm Mill are good for inexpensive curtains

woodhill · 11/06/2017 09:38

Look nice.

Yes my curtains last for donkey's years too then dust sheets.

Thank you for your help and replies everyone. 😊

@wowfudge I bought cheap curtains from Wilko and The Range and chucked them in the washing machine to clean quite often which ruined them. I know, I'm silly!

Unless they're in a kitchen or bathroom I would say stop washing them so much. I'd say they probably only need cleaned once a year IMO (used to work in a curtain shop btw, we'd never recommend frequent cleaning)

Curtains are easy to make technically - straight rectangles - but they can be an absolute bugger if you have big windows and not so big floor space, especially if you are lining. My living room window requires double with curtains with a 3m drop...the room is not much wider than that and there's furniture in it!

DerelictWreck · 11/06/2017 16:03

£109 is pretty cheap for a pair of full length curtains! Yes you will always get cheaper from Ikea, Dunelm Mill etc but good, quality curtains that block light will never cost you less than £100 new!

FrogFairy · 11/06/2017 16:51

Two things I notice.

They are not eyelet top, they are described as dual pole pocket and hidden tab. Check your pole is suitable for this. I have no idea how smooth this style of curtain top is to open and close.

Secondly, they are 122cm width. The photo either shows a much wider curtain or two pairs hung together as I don't believe you would have all those folds in 122 cm of fabric. If you look at the photos of the curtains in the stone colour you will see only half a dozen folds of fabric. If your window is very narrow it might be ok.

JellyMouldJnr · 11/06/2017 18:03

WARNING! Westelm sell curtains individually so you need to buy two for a pair. I have been caught out by this before.

FrogFairy · 11/06/2017 18:25

Oh yikes, I just noticed it says sold individually. Hope the OP checks back before buying.

I have to say over £200 for such narrow curtains is a bit steep.

user1494957155 · 11/06/2017 22:45

@Frogfairy Thank you SO much for pointing those details out! I probably wouldn't have gone in for a second read of the description and am so glad you noticed what you did! I'm glad I checked back here just now or I'd have placed an order thinking I was going to receive a pair and it would have been a right mess returning them!

I completely agree and don't think over £200 a pair for curtains is a reasonable price, especially not knowing what kind of lining they have. Aah, the quest for perfect curtains continues. I might save a bit and splurge on a pair that will last me years, fingers crossed.

@JellyMouldJnr Thank you also for pointing out the individual curtain thing! Much appreciated. 😊
