Size of island

We will have a big space in our new home 8.5x 7.5m kitchen living room; I had planned a kitchen island which is close on 3.5m long; approx 1m wide; DH not too happy thinks it's too big-what do you thing?

It is not too long - mine is about the same, but it it is too narrow at 1m! Units are 600 mm deep. You only have a single row of units and a 400mm overhang all the way for 3500mm. This wastes a huge storage opportunity. Mine is 1450 wide. Your DH is wrong, by the way. It would also be unbalanced and would look like a strip of an island.

We have cupboards on both sides and a wooden circular breakfast bar built into the top right corner which seats 4. This enables visitors to sit and chat whilst we cook. They are not lined up like ducks in a row either. On the side not close to the cooking action, I have a water softener, electrical equipment and picnic storage. I have a wine fridge in the laundry room but could have had it in this space in the kitchen - depends how handy you want it! Also I have a 900 mm hob, 900 mm oven under and a veg prep sink in the end of the island, plus a wonderful work area. To soften the ends so it does not look angular, the cupboards are rounded under the sink end and also under the breakfast bar. Near the breakfast bar, and on the large work surface space, we have pop up sockets for laptops, mixers, etc. They are handy and the wiring comed up the centre of the island.

You have lots of space, so getting the maximum out of the island is worth it. It is The feature in my kitchen!

Have you had a look on Houzz? DH and you could have a look at what different size islands look like. Personally, I probably wouldn't like the propositions of a 3.5x1 as it would look quite long and thin. So sth a bit fatter or shorter but then it really depends on everything else in the space...

Whattodowithaminute · 07/06/2017 17:46

Have had a look on houzz hence I was comfortable with the size Grin Sorry the plan was for an overhang; so 60 depth units one side and had thought 37 on the other side with overhang to take it to 1.2m plus but maybe the space will take 2 lots of 60 and an overhang...

You have a large kitchen so why have a long thin island? If you have 1200 you have no space for pop up electrical sockets. These are invaluable for such a big space. Have you got a kitchen manufacturer in mind because a good one will help enormously. Look at web sites for projects. E.g. Cotteswood, Plain English, Martin Moore etc .

We have an L shaped island with curved ends - one unit deep with 35cm overhang. The top of the L is 120cm deep with the fronts of the units facing you as you walk into the kitchen. It's a big space and we could have put an island two units deep in, but we wanted to keep the sense of space and not make it feel cramped to get to the back door. Plus we have room for a corner window seat too.

Did you see Big House Little House at the weekend? The couple in the big house put a huge island in their kitchen and it was too imposing imo, plus it was painted a dark colour so sucked all the light out of the room too.

JoJoSM2 · 07/06/2017 20:24

Since you've looked on Houzz, then presumably the size will work for you ;) I also second the idea of making sure you've got space for sockets on the island - very useful.

Bojo do you have any pictures of your island? Sounds fabulous

OnePlanOnHouzz · 07/06/2017 20:54

Might your DH feel a bit better about any future layout if he saw it all drawn up in 3D with a panoramic that he could see on his phone like this

To get a better feel for it all ?! ( this moves around the room with you if you open it in a tablet or phone etc) .

Shit. I came on expecting Xenia and a new tropical paradise. 🤣🤣

TalkinPeece · 07/06/2017 21:25

HTK · 07/06/2017 22:06

That's awesome OnePlan! Can anyone use that software?

MarciaBlaine · 07/06/2017 22:07

Hippy, and me Grin

OnePlanOnHouzz · 08/06/2017 06:23

@HTK - thanks !
That's the professional design software I use when I'm designing ... it's not cheap but does give great images !
( it cost a few thousand !!)
But I think it's worth it as gives people a really good impression of what they are shopping around for - I add it into the finished PDF (of an A service design) along with plans, elevations and perspectives with an item list that people use so they can compare 'like for like' when investing in a new kitchen, or bedroom etc

OnePlanOnHouzz · 08/06/2017 06:25

Oh blimey. That reads like I sell kitchens ! I don't - I'm a freelance concept planner !! I don't sell anything !!! Just design !

namechangedtoday15 · 08/06/2017 09:33

I agree that its too narrow. Our room is smaller than yours (about 7m x 7m) and our island is about 2.5 x 1.2 or thereabouts - we have 60cm deep cupboards on the kitchen side, then 30cm deep cupboards and an overhang on the dining room side. Your room could definitely take a wider island.

I agree with seeing a design in 3D or similar. Rather than being too imposing, I think our island is the real focal point of the kitchen and to an extent, made the rest of the extension work around it rather than the other way round. Once you have the worktop, lights etc etc it really creates a bit of a wow factor. Don't compromise on the size of the island, think you'll regret it.
