Cheap kitchen revamp!

Do you think this will work/have you done this before...

We are desperately trying to sell our house but buyers pulled out (duee to damp, but that problem now resolved). We haven't had any offers lately and am convinced it is due to the kitchen. We have done up the whole house except the kitchen. It has dark brown wooden 70s cabinets, cream laminate worktop, white tiles with a border of dark green ivy edging tiles, cream and grey patchwork floor tiles. The ceiling is half falling down and has spray painted ivy on the coving.

In a mad fit of 'must do something to sell this damn house' I have just purchased:

  • brightly coloured patterned ceramic door knobs
  • cobalt blue tile paint
  • vintage style patterned tile transfers

My grand plan for Friday night was to paint the horrible dark green ivy tiles bright blue, make a patchwork of the tile transfers on the splashbacks but leaving some white ones - scatter them about, and replace the horrible sticky metal dangly door pulls with the ceramic knobs.

Have you ever done such a cheap refurb? Did it make a difference? Do you think the above will help? For a grand total of £50 I thought it was worth a shot seeing as we aren't going to a) replaster the entire kitchen b) fit new cabinets or c) redo the floor before we move out.

Also love the sprayed kitchen idea. Anyone know of anywhere in London/South East that will do this?

purpleladybird · 08/06/2017 11:28

I really am getting too excited about this. Is anyone able to explain how the spraying the worktop works? I can't imagine how it would look or that it would be hard wearing enough but clearly it must be.

I agree you would be better off just painting the walls and paintwork. Clean and tidy is better.

Adding blue accents to it will just make it worse.

OP, if you're going for bare minimum to sell, and you think a buyer will be ripping the kitchen out anyway, then I'd agree with the others and say just make it clean and tidy. No point spending money you don't have to. But if it's basically serviceable, then why not think about getting a quote for something like a basic respray for £300 or so. It might be enough to tip the balance for a prospective buyer.

And to those interested in the respraying, the Halifax company I used cover the whole country. Just saying... Smile

MotherofBoy as you've already bought the bits and pieces and it doesn't sound like it'll take too long, why not give it a go? If it is really worn, as you say, then I would make a feature out of it and say 'We decided not to do the kitchen to keep the asking price down and allow the new owners to put their own stamp on it'.

If affordable I would repair the ceiling and consider smoothing the walls. I think that a falling down ceiling will make people question how well maintained the house but dated units won't.

Ok so the tile paint arrived so I had a dabble in a corner under a cabinet. Even dh is pleasantly surprised and said it makes it looks much fresher! Not 100% sure if will do it yet will wait til it is dry tomorrow and then decide. Made mistake of not masking the grouting tho so edges are a bit wobbly but will do that if I do all of it. @MotherofBoy

How did you get on? Are you pleased with the results? Hope it was a productive Friday night.

MotherofBoy · 12/06/2017 14:06

Decided against the transfers as they looked naff when they arrived. Liked the tile paint (pic above) but only done one so far. Knobs arriving today!
