What's the best option in a kitchen diner?

We're going to get a new kitchen. We have a kitchen diner with lots of cupboards and work top space. BUT the fridge freezer is in the dining area.

So, do we
A) keep the cupboard and worktop space we have but leave the fridge freezer in the dining area?
Or
B) move the fridge freezer into the kitchen area but lose cupboard and worktop space?

I'd really like the dining area to have more space, maybe enough for a small arm chair (not the fridge). And the worktops are often a dumping ground because they aren't all in use iyswim.

WWYD?

I'd have to move the fridge. I couldn't cope with the fridge not being in the kitchen

I'd definitely move the fridge to behind the door. Look at pan drawers rather than cupboards and try to have a 600 wide unit rather than two 300 wide as you get more room in them (particularly if you go with drawers). L shaped corner cupboards are easier to access than the blind ones you have on the floor plan too.

Have had a quick doodle on your plan - as DW really needs to be away from corner - and this gives you big drawers either side of cooker - or you could have smaller drawers and bigger cooker !!
but if you really don't want fridge next to door will need more info re doors walls and window sizes and positions to help further !

Thanks! :)

Moving the DW hadn't occurred to me - but does make sense.
I'm off to a kitchen place tomorrow so will see what they suggest too.

Plan is to see what they sketch out and then label all the cupboard/ drawers with where everything will fit. I'm hoping there won't be too much left over - but a sideboard or row of smaller units could be the answer.

Do need to persuade dh that an American style fridge freezer is just too big! Confused

You really need to get a proper kitchen plan. Not one done a retailer as all they care about is something that looks nice. E.g. They will make lots of little cuboatds so the design is symmetrical but they are useless.

Don't spend thousands on a kitchen and scrimp the hundred it will cost you max for a decent plan.

Dining room will look much better with storage unit for some sort where you can keep all the dishes you rarely use . Have large built in fridge in kitchen . You use the fridge dozensof times a day. How often do you use large dishes / casseroles for entertaining, picnic stuff, etc .

I had an American style fridge freezer in my old house and when we redid the kitchen in this house we tried to fit one in. However it wasn’t possible so we went for a really tall fridge with a small bit of freezer underneath. I actually like this fridge better as i think it holds more and is easier to access. I also have a freezer in my garage so i only needed a small one in the kitchen - mostly for ice for my gin! Grin

I had a carpenter make my kitchen. You can see in the pic the tall fridge freezer is on the right and he made a natty little pull out larder plus shelves for my herbs and spices on the left as there is a pipe box behind there that couldn't be moved. I really went for function over everything else when I did this kitchen.

We moved fridge from utility to behind door in a very similar kitchen (with DW on the end) and it's so much better. I like OnePlan's low cabinets. We have built in storage bench seating there.

bojorojo · 08/06/2017 14:34

I have two built in fridges and a three drawer freezer in a bank of units in the kitchen. I would use the whole room as I said before. You have room for a table near the doors but you are really compromising the kitchen by not using all the space and having the fridge on its own in a corner is awful. Either use the whole wall available where the fridge is located or the long wall. Having floor to ceiling units really improves storage and larder units work well. I love mine.

I found this to be massively helpful when planning my kitchen layout:-connect.blum.com/files/brochure/BRO009_DYNAMICSPACE_ZZ_.pd

YorkshireTea86 · 10/06/2017 08:25

(Please excuse terrible writing on sketch!)If you were worried about storage you could always put a couple of larders where the fridge is now coming towards the door. And you could look at some of the smaller American f/f if your dh has his heart set on it, they have some 700 and 800 wide now.

Move the ff into the kitchen part, then buy a dresser to go into the dining part for all dining plates; cutlery; glassware.
