Need urgent help with choosing bathroom tiles!

Hi, I am doing the bathroom renovation and need to order tiles today or tomorrow, and I am totally stuck (( The bathroom will have a roll top bath on legs (keeping the old one as it's good and can't afford a decent replacement) and the toilet is also from the "Edwardian" range. I am thinking of also getting a similar type basin with pedestal.

Now the tiles - I was going to have these white marble look ones throughout the bathroom
www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/dorchester-tiles-white-carrara-marble-effect-wall-tiles

But now I have seen these one and really want to add the blue tiles in
www.tilezone.co.uk/Hall-Blue-36DL-hall-blu-tiles-imola

I want to have a wall behind the shower doors and a couple of vertical stripes above the sink and the toilet (and possibly one large of two small stripes behind the bath??) - but I am worried that they do not fit together (i.e. white marble and blue "wavy" ones)? I did not want to go for the white wavy from the same range as I need about 28m2 of white tiles, and the white marble like one are 1.5 times less expensive, but will it look good??

Oh, and to throw to the mix, I am hoping to hang a large old mirror in golden frame above the bath....

All opinions welcome! Thank you so much!

JMO but a roll top Edwardian style bath and similar style sink and those blue tiles don't mesh well, imo. In fact I'd go with minimal tiling and what I did have would be metro tiles, grey grout, possibly slate floor?

karmi2010 · 06/06/2017 10:59

Many thanks HTK. I hate metro tiles with passion ((
to be honest, I don't really like the old style, but can't justify another bath as this roll top one is really good...
The basin is not bought yet, so I am in fact thinking about some modern style one, just worried it won't go well with the bath either...

In my opinion, stripes of coloured tiles among plain ones look terrible and date easily.

Just stick with the marble ones for a clean sophisticated finish.

wowfudge · 06/06/2017 11:06

Those blue tiles are hideous. Please don't. Stick with the marble or try the larger format Johnson's Savoy tiles (the flat ones) which have lovely variation in tone and would work well in a period property bathroom.

JoJoSM2 · 06/06/2017 11:07

I agree that the modern tiles and the traditional bath will look bad together. If you're not much of a fun of the Edwardian look, why don't you just make the bathroom look modern? There are many online shops and I'm sure you'll be able to find a replacement bath on a budget. You can also proceed with the modern tiles. Personally, I love marble and natural stone but think that the pretend marble tiles look very tacky.

unfortunateevents · 06/06/2017 11:16

I don't like those blue tiles, and certainly not mixed with the white marble. If you must use them, they need to go with their matching white tiles. Have you also checked that they are the same thickness of tile? Otherwise, the wall won't even be smooth where you use them.

unfortunateevents · 06/06/2017 11:17

sorry, meant to say that unless you have a very large bathroom, all those vertical stripes (in a tile pattern which has a vertical wave in it) is just going to make the bathroom look like a tall, narrow tube.

solittletime · 06/06/2017 11:23

Havev you thought of a black and white scheme. I know a beautiful bathroom with large black floor tiles, white in the wall and a big olde world gilded mirror. The black modernised but complements the look

suzyrut · 06/06/2017 11:25

Hi Karmi,

I ordered some samples of a similar tile to the marble ones and you really have to see them in the flesh as they really vary in quality of the finish. Of the two though I would probably go with the marble looking ones but maybe have a darker floor.

It sounds to me a bit like you aren't sure what you really want the overall look of the bathroom to be, have you seen any pictures of whole bathrooms on houzz or pinterest with similar baths that you like? I think it's hard to make good decisions on a project with lots of components without having a clear idea of what you're aiming for at the end.

karmi2010 · 06/06/2017 12:45

Thank you so much everyone! You are all quite right, I don't have a firm idea of what I want (
I though I wanted to have a white bathroom with the gold mirror I bought (the idea came when I bought the mirror, but now I am having second thought about the mirror too - it is a beautiful mirror but not a specifically bathroom one...). I then got worried that I am not sure I want a white bathroom, so decided to add some colour in...
I don't like the traditional look in general but I do like my roll top bath...
I agree that metro tiles work best with these baths but the only metro tiles I like are these ones

What people think about white marble for the whole bathroom and these tiles just for the shower bit (it is like and enclave in the bathroom which will be separated from the bathroom by the shower door)?
Or shall I do these tiles for the shower enclave plus half the bathroom, and paint white the rest of the bathroom walls?
Or half the bathroom in these tiles, half in white paint, and the shower enclave in some copper mosaic?

Those teal metro tiles are lovely.

I really think you shouldn't mix and match tiles. Just choose one you like such as the teal ones, and tile the areas that need it, so shower, above sink. Paint the rest of the walls white. Do you need tiles around the bath if it's a roll top?

cloughie100 · 06/06/2017 14:56

I would stick with traditional as you have roll top bath and at least it won't date as quickly as a more modern style! Do look on houzz for traditional style bathrooms ( you can filter the photo results) and I am sure you will get some good ideas

jane1511 · 06/06/2017 15:00

I think any kind of teal coloured tiles might look weird with a very traditional bath. What colour is the bath you have? What are you doing with the floor?

Qwebec · 06/06/2017 16:02

I agree that you need to see the tiles in person before comitting. In such a short ntice, I would go in a real shop. So you can really compare quality and place the tiles you choose together and see if they fit. as suggested, houzz will help you see different styles that fit with your tub. If you don't like edwardian bathrooms than no need to go there.

MargotLovedTom1 · 06/06/2017 16:08

Don't get mosaic in the shower area - there is so much grout which is a nightmare to keep clean.

MissPollyPops · 06/06/2017 17:40

I like the blue tiles but hate marble.. I would rather plain white ones...

MotherofBoy · 07/06/2017 13:44

To be completely honest I think both tiles are hideous. Get plain white if you must (I am not a fan of completely white bathrooms) but if you have a more traditional bathroom suite I would be tempted to go with more neutral or brown colours. Certainly not stripy turquoise.

MotherofBoy · 07/06/2017 13:46

P.S I do quite like the metro tiles. They would look good in a shower with white tiles elsewhere, but better if the white tiles were plain, or white metro, rather than marble

IfNot · 07/06/2017 14:14

OK. You can totally mix and match styles, and it's fine to have a non bathroom gilt mirror in a bathroom. It can also look really cool to mix modern with old. I would NEVER get rid of a great original roll top bath, and would not nessecarily feel the need to be matchy matchy with the tiles and other furnishings.
However, the blue tiles won't look good with the white marble, I agree.
I would stick with plain white marble OR be bold and go for a really strong dark colour for the whole room. Like emerald green or navy blue. The gilt mirror and extravagant bath will look really glam . Whatever you for don't opt for that beige faux marble that every body has and looks like a budget hotel.
Be bold, and only choose what you love.
