Tiny WC - Rehang door to open outwards or sink over toilet?

Recently moved into our house and the separate toilet does not have a sink in it. I quite like the fact that it's separate and would like to keep it that way as it's the only toilet in the house, and it's good to be able to use it if somebody is using the bathroom.
The toilet is too small to have a sink in it. The only options are to make the door open outwards and risk hitting somebody coming out of the bathroom or put one of those sink over toilet combos. Neither are ideal, but need to choose one of them. Which would you go for?

I think I prefer option 1 as opening the door outwards would make the toilet seem more spacious as well as accomodating a sink and I don't think it'll get in the way of the bathroom that much.

Option 2, I worry about splashing and having to lean over the toilet to wash hands.

WWYD?
Floor plan attached.

What about using L-combo, something like below?

Can you just keep a bottle of alcohol hand wash in there?

alabasterangel · 05/06/2017 15:32

Ours opens outwards too, both on our downstairs loo and on our small ensuite.

Our light pull is really 'clicky' and the bolt makes a noise. If someone is about to come out of the door it's fairly audibly noticeable!

NotAMammy · 05/06/2017 23:21

Apparently B&Q have stopped it due to a supplier issue. We have one in our understairs loo. We also have the door opening out into the hallway. It's absolutely teeny.
I don't mind the sink above the cistern but DH doesn't like it as he feels like it's hard to get his hands in under the tap. I've seen this complaint mentioned a lot when this style loo was featured on On the Tools or a similar facebook group, a lot of the men struggled with it.
On the upside it's really eco friendly.

an outward opening door will be handy the day someone collapses in there.

You might think it will never happen.

DesperateHouseknife · 06/06/2017 05:37

We just have a big box of disposable latex gloves. No sink needed.

JamAndBread · 06/06/2017 08:14

Jeeeeeezee PigletJohn, dark thoughts!

our bathroom has this problem and has a pair of outward opening cupboard style doors like a wardrobe.

frenchfancy · 06/06/2017 08:33

My builder recommended an outward opening door for the reason PigletJohn mentioned. If someone collapses against the door it would be very difficult to get them help.

Lonecatwithkitten · 06/06/2017 08:34

I would actually incorporate the loo into the bathroom and having a bigger bathroom. Maybe I just like pulling down walls.

NotMeNoNo · 06/06/2017 08:50

If the door opens out you could have a frosted glass panel so still private but enough to tell if someone is just outside. Also put a fire door closer on it so it does not get left open.

SilenceOfThePrams · 06/06/2017 08:59

No nooo not a frosted door please!

Open it outwards, but if you're worried about knocking into people, make sure it opens so it'll knock people into the bathroom, not down the stairs.

MaudAndOtherPoems · 06/06/2017 09:01

Isn't having a hand towel hanging a few inches from the loo just as yucky as touching door handles between loo and bathroom?

JamAndBread · 06/06/2017 10:10

I second a big fat no at the idea of a frosted glass door!

Imagine visiting someone and needing the loo and being faced with the prospect of a frosted glass door. You'd just know everyone would be able to see the blurry shape of you on the toilet as they walked past.

Hmmm probably, but most ensuites and downstairs WCs would also have this issue. I get what you're saying though. Me and DH would usually close the kids before flushing, but the kids probably won't, but can be trained to do so.

PigletJohn never thought of that!

MiaowTheCat Will check that out thanks.

Ok, going to get a joiner to rehang the door and see how it goes.

Hang the towel on the back of the door. And get a loo lid which closes automatically.

PigletJohn · 06/06/2017 13:12

"get a loo lid which closes automatically"

provided no men or boys are ever allowed to enter your house.

P1nkP0ppy · 06/06/2017 13:18

Look for 'space-saving toilet' online, there are plenty to choose from. Having an outward opening door is absolutely fine, go for it!

peukpokicuzo · 06/06/2017 13:40

You couldn't possibly have a sliding door - it would either have to slide into the bathroom or across the stairs!

Opening outwards could be OK. If you put frosted glass in the door then you could see shadow shapes through the glass enough to know if the door was about to open into someone.

I've seen an ultra-slim cloakroom sink which was actually mounted half way inside the wall - if you could find something like that it would help ensure that getting to the loo wasn't too obstructed.
