Must haves in a bathroom

I am about to fit a new bathroom. What would you say the must haves are.

Should I get a steel or acrylic bath? What taps are best? Is there a particular bath store I should be looking at?

I have room for a bath, sink and toilet. I'm also thinking a shower over the bath?

Any advice will be welcomed

Carronite (mentioned above) is a brand name. Other companies also do reinforced baths. My bath has "Diamond", for example. So you can just ask for a reinforced bath which is Carronite or similar.

I have a wall hung toilet and sink. They look great, but am yet to move back to see they were in practice.

*to see what they are like in practice

buttons in lids

If you've nerver had a problem you won't know what's wrong with them.

Try this.

Go up and lift the lids to see if the actual water level is exactly on the line marked "water level" on the back inside wall of the cistern. See if you can touch the float so that, if necessary, you could adjust it.

When you come back, you will know what's wrong with them.

Lighting either side of the mirror.

I had my bathroom done last year.
I went for a slightly smaller bath so I could also have a separate shower enclosure. No regrets there.

Things I don't like

  • I have dark ish grey tiles on the wall and even darker matt grey tiles on the floor. Wish I'd chosen lighter tiles on the wall and the dark tiles on the floor were a complete error. They show all the water drips and just look dirty all the time.
  • I have a square toilet. Looks nice but then I realised that in the event I ever need/ want to change the seat it will be expensive as it's "non standard"
  • I have a vanity unit (3 drawers) under the sink, however I don't have storage space for my bleach/ toilet cleaner etc, so I have the bottles next to the toilet/ sink... which just looks messy.

Good luck OP

Just finishing my ensuite having learnt some good things from redoing the main bathroom a couple of years ago.

  1. Shower wall - no more tiles and grout for me
  2. New fangled wave-your-hand electric flush button from Roper Rhodes. Hours of entertainment
3 Continuous one piece basin and work top. No more sealant around the basin and so easy to clean

We've just done ours - my tip would be DON'T get drawers under the sink with long Horizontal handles. they need wiping EVERY day from splash marks/dust etc

Like this www.novumbathrooms.co.uk/products/furniture/tranquil-60cm-unit-white/

We have a shower with overhead and it's FAB I love it, and I don't wash my hair everyday. It also has a handheld/wall mounted one in as well.

If you are going for a lighted mirror = get one with hand gestures, as every time you turn the light on and off if the switch is actually on the mirror then you leave finger prints everywhere.

We went for an acrylic free standing bath and it looks AMAZING. Though to be fair it hasn't been used in 6 months we've had it Blush but it looks good!

Make sure the shower screen is easy clean glass, they now make them where water doesn't really 'stick' to it so water marks etc are minimised.

sluj - Shower wall - no more tiles and grout for me

What's a shower wall?

Following on from Piglet John's comment about toilet lid buttons - I would add consider carefully what you are doing with the toilet - particularly whether you want it built in or not - and if you do want it built in, make sure you have a panel you can lift off the top to get to the cistern and that is big enough to allow the actual cistern cover to come out through it.

If you have any kind of plumbing problems with a built in toilet, if every time someone has to cut through grouting or totally dismantle the toilet surround to even get to it, it becomes both a big hassle and more expensive. It is a real pain.

Furball · 06/06/2017 18:07

cheersMedea - they are wall panels rather than tiles, Like Mermaid or Marbrex makes

They come in different panels, so you could get tile lookalike if wanted and never have mouldy grout ever again

Thanks furball never heard of this before.

We got Nuance by Bushboard. Not cheap but waterproof through the core

Iamastonished · 06/06/2017 18:58

MIL has wall panels in her bathroom. They are joined together by metal strips, and they are awful. The bathroom looks cheap and nasty. I'm sure if it had been professionally done it would look really nice.

sluj · 06/06/2017 19:12

You used to have metal strips but nowadays the better ones have matching sealant and tongue/groove. You can get some cheap boards from wickes etc but I wouldn't bother with them

sluj · 06/06/2017 19:18

Here's mine. Hope it doesn't look "cheap and nasty" Smile

We had them in the last apartment we rented.
They were easy to keep clean

And check the height of the toilet as well - some are lower than others so road test them in the showroom.
