Induction hobs, are they as good as people say?

We'll have an island in the new kitchen layout and are planing on putting a job on it as limited layout and it's looking like the most feasible layout.

I've never had an induction job, had electric and gas and much prefer the gas of the two I have experience of. After reading the kitchen lessons learnt thread though it seems the general consensus is that induction is the dogs danglies

Anything I need to know? Pitfalls?

Gas is best but induction better than standard electric. Just make sure you don't drop a pan or bash the surface and chip the glass...DFIL did it to DMIL's within about a fortnight of its installation and it was the super fancy pants one (can't remember name).

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/06/2017 22:18

Gas seems so slow compared to induction, when I cook at my dad's on gas I either accidentally turn it off or pans start boiling over. It seems so old skool now Grin

PickAChew · 04/06/2017 22:19

You can get pans smoking hot, Yorkshire, but it does work better if it's a saute pan, particularly if you're cooking more than one portion.

I have one that is sort of wok shaped, anyhow, with a wider base. It's a stupendously good pan.

Actually, it's called a chef pan. I think this one is mine. Obviously, you can't do the elaborate tossing routine, but that doesn't matter because the best stir fries I've had have been cooked on a flat griddle plate in a japanese restaurant, anyhow - same as burgers get cooked on, but involving lots of tossing with big ladles!

DS is mega into wok/japanese/chinese/stir-fry type cooking is getting on fab with the induction.

Tulips2lips · 05/06/2017 11:40

I don't think they are created equal. We have a Smeg one in our rental and it's totally rubbish. Much better than and old electric one but still not up to gas. So make sure you get a good one.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 05/06/2017 13:44

Smeg anything is crap ime. We have a Bosch and it's amazing,my mum's IKEA one, not so responsive.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 05/06/2017 13:50

I must be using them wrong or something. My mum has one and there was one in a holiday rental we went to a few times. Just could not get on with them at all & I hate them. Huge relief to get back to my gas!

magicstar1 · 05/06/2017 13:59

I love ours. It's an Ikea Hogsklassig and is the best thing ever. Easy to use, and so simple to keep clean. Fits any size pan as you can bridge the cooking areas.
These are the pots and pans we got...our last Circulon lasted for 8 years, and we passed them to PIL when we switched to induction. They still rave about how good they are.

The colour is gorgeous too.

piddleypower · 05/06/2017 14:58

Love my Neff. All the pans I already had were suitable, think I just got one new frying pan. Even my wok works as it is a flat bottomed one. So easy to clean, no more gunge around the burners, can set on timer. Yes it is a dogs danglies. If you are used to gas it will be similar but even faster/cleaner.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 05/06/2017 15:07

I have top of range meile now. It's the dogs bollocks.

Badweekjustgotworse · 05/06/2017 15:24

Okay then so given that we're minted and will be spending our entire savings on this extension and stretched as it is, what would you all recommend as a good make to go for?

I did rough search on the interwebs last night and it looks like it's possible to spend anything from a couple of hundred to a couple of grand Shock

so say we've a budget of 500/600 what should I be looking at and what key features are important?

We have an induction range. You'd definitely be getting an induction hob?

ineedwine99 · 05/06/2017 16:02

Love it! very easy to clean, instant temperature changes, very quixk to heat up and sleek as no dials.
This one is mine: www.zanussi.co.uk/kitchen/cooking/hobs/induction-hob/zem6740fba/#&gid=null&pid=1

purpleprincess24 · 05/06/2017 16:48

I've had the Miele one for 10 years, best ever and so easy to clean

BeanSprout79 · 05/06/2017 16:54

Brilliant. Won't go back now.

eddielizzard · 05/06/2017 16:58

i don't know how much they cost, but miele is great. mine's nearly 10 years old and it looks like new. use it every day.

Madbengalmum · 05/06/2017 17:04

I bought the ne included in a house we moved to and i was intent it was going and my gas Falcon range was moving back in. I loved it though after a few days, soo easy to clean. I have just had a huge silver Siemens induction hob which is brilliant and i love the fact it isnt black glass.

Madbengalmum · 05/06/2017 17:06

I wont do miele because everything from built in nespresso machines, dishwashers and steam ovens have gone wrong and service was awful. Fridges broke too. So i avoid Miele on principal.

Wiifitmama · 05/06/2017 17:11

We just redid our kitchen and moved it to a room without gas. So we switched from a gas hob to an induction one. I love it! So much quicker to cook than gas. Very responsive and I have a Miele one which has 6 "burners" but they also combine into big cooking zones. Many of my pans are massive so they go across to "burners" and become one zone. Love it!

For the poster who said no to Miele. We specifically only buy Miele as they have been so fantastic. We have Miele washing machine and dryer and dishwasher that are 7 years old and we just moved them to our new kitchen. Our new oven is Miele too. The only thing we did not buy Miele was the fridge freezer as I wanted a big american one and they did not do one at the time.
