Storage in a tiny house

Herestonevergrowingup · 04/06/2017 10:19

I am seriously downsizing and buying a lovely little two-bed house. Downstairs consists of one main living room (stairs in the room) and one small kitchen. Upstairs there are two bedrooms, both with fitted wardrobes but only big enough for clothes and shoes and maybe storing some games/toys.

There is not a single cupboard for storage eg Hoover, ironing board, Christmas tree.

Any ideas on where to put things?! I thought of boxing in under the stairs but it would take away too much space from the living room.

Even if I have a major declutter I am going to be stuck.

Can you fit a larder cupboard in the kitchen? The ironing board can clip onto the back of the door. A smaller Hoover, such as a Henry can go on the bottom and above shelving for iron, laundry basket etc.
Perhaps a weatherproof shed outside for Christmas tree and things in large plastic storage boxes.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 04/06/2017 10:34

Loft?

Herestonevergrowingup · 04/06/2017 10:34

A small shed is a good idea.

Obviously not for ironing board but loft for seasonal stuff can work quite well.

Ironing boards are slim so could be hung on the back of a door or on a hook on the wall.

Silverdream · 04/06/2017 10:40

Can you box in over the stairs and turn into a cupboard in a bedroom.
Loft ladder and board loft out.
Shelf over door way in bathroom to hold towels.

Herestonevergrowingup · 04/06/2017 10:42

I will have to check the loft space but I think it's very small.

Is there no space at all under stairs? It may need reconfiguring somehow but should allow for something?

monsieurpoirot · 04/06/2017 10:51

Get a dyson cordless vacuum, and the smallest ironing board you can (or stop ironing!) and keep in your wardrobe if they don't fit in the kitchen. Buy a small real Xmas tree every year, and keep one box of fairy lights to decorate. Be ruthless about having a capsule wardrobe. Store towels, sheets and out of season vacuum packed clothes under your bed. Take photos of all the important documents we store, back up in a couple of places, then a lot can be shredded. Donate your books and join a library. Keep buggy and shopping bags in the car boot. Don't bulk buy at the supermarket. Have a slim cupboard by the front door for coats and shoes if you don't have a hall.

I have lock up storage away from the house , it's £ 's per month extra but couldn't do without it

Herestonevergrowingup · 04/06/2017 11:01

I have a mini ikea ironing board that can go on the back of a door. Hardly iron anyway these days so I can hide the iron in a kitchen cupboard.

The space under the stairs is where a tv would go so not sure if i could
Box it in and have enough space.

I have a big box of Xmas decorations and a huge tree with millions of separate branches so I will have to get rid of the tree.

I have streamlined books and cds so I'm ok there but have loads of photo albums and paperwork etc.

Great ideas, thanks.

I used to have a v small house - the key answer is to have very very few possessions.

Other than that, think laterally - can you move the bed forward to have more storage behind the bed? This was where I put ironing board and hoover etc all behind a big curtain. Make sure all beds allow underbed storage. Don't have more than 2 sets of towels - one out, one in the wash - that's it.

Hooks on backs of doors are a godsend.

Capsule wardrobe. Small TV.

Loft for Xmas decorations etc. Wrap boxes in clingfilm to put in shed so insects etc don't get in.

Slim shoe cupboard behind frontdoor. Don't own many shoes.

Have photo albums put onto a memory stick. Minimize paperwork - do everything online. You should be able to keep everything in one box file.

Get the ottoman beds that lift up for both bedrooms. So. Much. Storage.

Honestly the amount of stuff you can fit under a king sized ottoman bed is craz.

sooperdooper · 04/06/2017 11:18

Do you have storage under both beds? We use that for all spare bedding, towels, winter/summer clothes depending on what's not being used

I put a shelf across the top of the door in our bathroom for extra storage, could that work?

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 04/06/2017 11:19

Ottoman beds! I have one, it's amazing. My spare bed is wooden with built in drawers beneath and a box at the foot end. Then suitcases etc go in the middle.

Herestonevergrowingup · 04/06/2017 11:53

Brilliant ideas eg hooks on doors, small shelves above doors.

I can do some of these but no way can I see me doing a capsule wardrobe!

Shelves in every room. Extra cupboards high up. Bedside tables with big drawers in.
Baskets under the bed and in top of the wardrobe. Every piece of furniture with drawers/ cupboard, e.g. telly stands on a cupboard, dining table has drawers.

We have all this plus understairs storage and we still have no space!

You could also look at a footstool with storage, which I wish we had bought when we got ours.

FrogFairy · 04/06/2017 12:36

Another vote for ottoman beds.

You could consider a pop up Christmas tree as the box is just a bit bigger than a pizza box.

TheGoodWife16 · 04/06/2017 13:24

We're downsizing from a 4 bed detached to a 2 bed semi but we're extremely fortunate that we will also have a garage to store everything in while we organise decent storage. We do have a small storage cupboard in the hallway downstairs and a large airing cupboard on the landing, so the ironing board and Hoover have places to go.

We've massively decluttered, sold furniture on gumtree and we'll be replacing what furniture we do take with better storage solutions where possible. Shelves and hooks are top of our list!

Etymology23 · 04/06/2017 16:27

Remember if you have a garden you'll presumably need a shed anyway - for a lawnmower etc, so xmas stuff can go out there. I also store all things like plumbing towels, diy stuff, spare washing liquid and dishwasher tablets, champagne flutes etc out there. Things I really don't use often (eg camping gear) goes in the loft.

I also don't have an under stairs cupboard. I've been thinking of doing a little curtain think just to 4ft high or so - to give me room and hide the things like the hoover. I also have a cupboard over the stairs which is a godsend.

RandomlyGenerated · 04/06/2017 18:01

Or a small real tree at Christmas if you can?

You'd also be amazed at how much you can fit in a shed.

Herestonevergrowingup · 04/06/2017 18:54

I have a divan bed with drawers big enough for sheets, bedding and towels.

Will definitely get a shed.

I will have to declutter more. It's crazy how much stuff I have accumulated over the years. I have got so many toiletries and every beauty product you can think of that I don't even use. Hopefully I will save money in the long term by not buying more new stuff.

Oh and kitchen gadgets. Slow cooker, blender, sandwich maker, mixer, everything.

YouCannotPossiblyBeHungry · 04/06/2017 19:02

I recently discovered that I can store stuff that I don't need very often under the kitchen units, behind the kick-boards. I have all the spare tiles etc under there. I think you can also get roll-out drawers also to store things there.

RTKangaMummy · 04/06/2017 19:04

Goon PININTEREST and search storage inside stairs

You will see how you can make each stair into a drawer SmileSmileSmile

Also shelves above doorways SmileSmileSmile

Herestonevergrowingup · 04/06/2017 19:51

Those stair drawers are amazing! And the pull out drawers for coats and shoes.
