Is there a definitive answer to which should go in first - kitchen or flooring?

I was told flooring first then kitchen.
My friend has been told kitchen then flooring.

So whose builder is right?!

If the kitchen is fully fitted then kitchen first. Why waste money on extra tiles that will never be seen?

If the kitchen units are free standing and not fully fitted then flooring first just in case you decide to change the layout

Our kitchen had wall to wall ceramic tiles, good quality ones. They have lasted a rearrangement of units, extension and complete reconfiguration and are still in place with new kitchen. I thinks it's a waste to rip out a good quality floor that should last for many years. If it's just inexpensive laminate or vinyl it might need repacking sooner.

flooring first definitely.

If you put flooring underneath your units, it's going to be a huge problem if you have a machine leak. Also, the flooring will not fade if it's a wood floor so if you change the units you may find you have to rip out the floor anyway as it will age unevenly.

why would you want a floor in a kitchen that doesn't withstand water?

You will be mopping up spills, dropping bottles, kicking over pet bowls, letting the sink overflow, and having faults with your appliances.
