Banging noise in loft

We have a banging noise in our loft that wakes us at night - definitely banging and not scurrying! We've had pest control round who have laid traps, none of which have been touched and there's no evidence of anything furry up there. Pest control suggested it could be bees so we went for fumigation but it hasn't worked! Any ideas on what on earth it could be?? Anyone had bee experiences?? TIA.

Aliens?
Squatters?

Hmmm. Invisible aliens and tiny squatters if that's the case! It's right above our heads and not at a time when there should be anything happening to make pipes noisy - no hot water or heating going on.

Could be expansion and contraction. The tiles absorb a huge amount of heat from the sun, and cool off overnight, so things could be moving to and fro and sticking then releasing with a bang, like an earthquake in a way.

have you got a hot water cylinder? What colour? how hot is the tapwater.

Have you had the roof timbers altered since the house was built? Loft conversion, storage area?

squirrel. Had one last year. It nearly drove me up the wall.
Sounded like it was rolling around.

Banging or tapping? I've heard Death Watch Beetle at night, that's a regular quite loud tapping and occurs at this time of year as part of their mating cycle.

Ok so pest man has said squirrel or rat, so I'm going squirrel as they fill me with less horror
Anyone had one and successfully got rid? We're going to need to find and block off the entry point...

We had them when we lived in a house surrounded by trees. They will eat their way in through wooden barge boards and soffits. Ours were removed by pest control! Don't ask!
But we had to put chicken wire around our gutters to stop them getting back in. When we replaced the barge boards, soffits with UPVC they never returned.
I had heard that old ferret bedding straw kept them away, due to the smell!

Pest man has laid traps so hopefully they'll go for the bait and enable us to sleep again. We've only been here for 6 months but are surrounded by woods. Seemed like a good idea at the time. Not so sure now - there's a LOT more wildlife. JT05 did the pest man and UPVC finish off the problem permanently?
