We are moving home and the kitchen is small. To make best use of the space we are happy to move and/or block up doors. Just looking for suggestions.

I would put a door into the living room where the cupboard is (unless it has a boiler in or you need it) and remove it from the kitchen

QuackDuckQuack · 10/05/2017 18:15

I would either block up the side door (not sure if this would be a buildings regs issue and you will lose some light) or pen the kitchen out into the lounge/diner and put more kitchen along the back wall.

Depending on the amount of work your willing to do I would 'split' the living room into two (by putting in a stud wall and French doors) then knock out the kitchen wall so extending it into a kitchen diner xx

JonesyWonesy · 10/05/2017 18:17

I would put the wall back up between the lounge and diner and then open up the kitchen so you have a kitchen/diner. Those long thin lounge diners are quite impractical IMO.

LapdanceShoeshine · 10/05/2017 18:24

Assuming you weren't intending to knock walls down yet, losing the door into the dining area would be the best bet - my MIL's kitchen was exactly like this & that's what they did, although the door into the living room off the hall was nearer.

Agree though that knocking through for a big kitchen-diner & blocking off living room would be best solution long-term

Turn one or two of them into pocket doors ?

CakeThat · 10/05/2017 18:31

I'd do what the others have suggested and put up a wall to separate the living room area into two, just keeping the front half as the living room. Then knock down the wall dividing the kitchen and the back half of the living room. You would only need one door to access the living area and one door to access the kitchen/diner.
I'd also get the either the side or rear external door blocked up if you don't need them for any particular reason.

Could you move the hallway door/partition so it is the other side of cupboards and opens into hall. Then knock out cupboard/s to make a bigger room. Have storage at the hall end (big fridge/larder) freeing up space at the window end.

Some great options, thank you. Will talk it over with DP.

You may need a fire door between kitchen and hall - it's a good idea even if not mandatory ! Sorry I forgot to draw one in !
And if money were no object - then a crittal style divider between lounge and dining could be cool - or you could just keep it open plan !

origamiwarrior · 11/05/2017 07:35

Surely you would just knock through to your inner hallway?
No need to move services etc. just have extra cupboards/freezer/dresser at that end of the kitchen.
