Carpets - do the fitters clear the room?

Need new carpets upstairs and I cannot get my head round the logistics of how you clear out one room, get the carpet fitted then clear the next room into the done room etc. It's a three bedroom house - does that mean you have to do it over three days? Do the fitters do it? Can you pay extra for them to do it as I'm sure they would be much better at it and quicker than me. Any advice most welcome.

I had to hoof everything bar the beds and wardrobes from my 3 bedrooms into a fourth room that wasn't being done.

Complete nightmare.

TyrionLannistersShadow · 04/05/2017 16:08

No they don't, not in my experience anyway. When we got the 4 bedrooms upstairs recarpeted I arranged for 2 rooms to be done one day and the other 2 the following day. So first day I cleared all furniture from room 1 and 2 into room 3 and 4, and they laid carpet in 1 and 2, then vice versa the following day.

trixymalixy · 04/05/2017 16:09

I would ask the carpet fitters. some will move furniture, some won;t.

My friend had cleared everything bar the bed, thinking the fitters wouldn't mind moving it between rooms. They refused and she had to reschedule the carpet fitting.

PigletJohn · 04/05/2017 16:09

assume not. their contract may even specify "rooms to be cleared"

it will be considerable extra work.

they might do it at extra cost, or possibly hire some labourers in.

sometimes they will move a table and chairs without complaining, but probably not large or heavy furniture.

Playdoughinthecarpet · 04/05/2017 16:09

You could offer extra money, would ask in advance (get the fitters mobile number if buying from a shop who sub-contract). I had to clear rooms (used Carpetright.) Did leave 2 sofas in front room which wasn't a problem but moved everything else. Am sure they could work with a bed and chest of drawers in the room if you moved everything else. They are really quick, won't take a day per room.

Kokusai · 04/05/2017 16:17

Some do some don't.
Certainly charge extra if they do.

I moved everything out except bed and (empty) wardrobes and the fitter did half the room then we shifted the bed and wardrobe together to the other side of the room.

We're about to have a 4 bed house done and will have it done over 2 days (only 2 mornings really) to allow all stuff to be piled in the 2 rooms not being done on that day.

Lesley1980 · 04/05/2017 23:08

I paid extra to have the fitters move furniture & take away the old carpet & excess new carpet. They were only doing one room & I think it was £60 extra.

BackforGood · 04/05/2017 23:18

Most will expect the room to be completely empty.
Some will negotiate a different contract around moving furniture. You've got a better chance with independents though than the big chains.

AlexaAmbidextra · 04/05/2017 23:44

Mine did but then they were an independent outfit. You're more likely to get them clear the rooms than if you go to one of the big carpet warehouses that advertise on the telly.

Bluebell9 · 05/05/2017 08:42

When I had 4 bedrooms done, I cleared the rooms and had it done 2 rooms at a time. They would have cleared the rooms but it would cost me extra.

Heathcliffitsme · 05/05/2017 09:03

I had the whole upstairs done by an independent company and the manager turned up with the fitter twice during the day to help move things around after I said that I wouldn't be able to. I dont know if that is the norm but how do elderly people manage?

Pebbles16 · 05/05/2017 09:06

Thanks very much. I don't think I could physically move some of the stuff on my own so will make sure I find someone who will be willing to do it.

I know it's a massive pain in the arsenal for the fitters! My OH is one and hates it when people don't empty rooms. If they've made no effort then the fitting is rescheduled
If discussed in advance and all the 'clutter' has been removed and it's just a couple of pieces of bare furniture (think bed with bedding removed) the with advance discussion that is fine
It's aaaall about the communication! X
