trampoline (sunken) in small terraced garden. WIBU?

I would love to put a trampoline in our garden for the DDs. Mostly for fun but also because DD1 has mild cerebral palsy and it would be really good for her core strength and stretching out her stiff ankle.

However we live in a London terrace with small back gardens, about 7.5m square. All the neighbours' gardens are similar so we're pretty close together, it's not like putting a trampoline at the end of a long garden, realistically the trampoline would be pretty close to where the neighbours are sitting in their gardens. I'm not sure if it's too anti social to have a trampoline in this situation? I don't want to be the bane of the neighbourhood.

I would sink it into the ground so there wouldn't be a loss of privacy but I have heard trampolines are noisy. I am not sure if this is from the trampoline or the children being loud when they are on it? (tbh my two tend to be noisy whatever they are doing).

What do you think? Thanks

I wouldn't do it from a safety point of view, nothing to do with your neighbours. If you want them to have a trampoline then get a normal one with a net and be reasonable about the amount of noise they make while playing on it. The trampolines tend not to make a noise themselves, it's the kids.

Surely ones sunken into the ground are the safer option?

I think it sounds like a good idea, as long as you're mindful of your neighbours

Yay! Replies. Thanks

Yes sunken is safer and they can still have a safety net installed all round.

Ok good to know the trampoline itself isn't noisy. Just need to work on DD1's volume control!

Our neighbours have one and the only thing that annoys me is that you can see it/the kids popping up (also small gardens) if was a sunken one it wouldn't bother me. I don't notice the noise from the trampoline and the laughter/screams are just part and parcel of living in cramped suburbs.

minipie · 04/05/2017 22:18

Thanks Plaice glad to hear that.

My garden is 12 metres long and about 18ft wide and I have a sunken 12ft trampoline. Kids adore it and I've never had any complaints.

Just do it!

Great, thanks! Now just to work on DH who doesn't want to lose some of his precious lawn Hmm

I think it's a great idea, especially for DC with CP.

One thing can, rarely, be an issue - the water table.dig a test hole ,to the depth you'd need, leave for a few days, and see if it fills with water. Cover the hole, obvs, so it's not just gaining rainwater.

Many places you'll be absolutely fine, others not.

Neighbours have a ginormous trampoline which irritates the life out of me. It's not the noise it's the bobbing of heads accompanied by little faces peering at me whilst I garden. If it was sunken it would be sooo much nicer. Noise wouldn't be a problem for me.

Thanks for the tip Dancing!

Snowballs hmm that's a bit of a worry. Would it be sorted by some WD40 I wonder... squeaking would drive me mad as well as the neighbours!

Yes would definitely sink it, I can see the privacy issue, and anyway otherwise it would take over our titchy garden

As a gymnastics coach the sunken ones are far safer and those nets are dangerous! The picture of the trampoline in the above is perfect Smile
And I think you should go ahead, everyone has them these days.

minipie · 05/05/2017 22:24

That's interesting pinkiponk why are the nets dangerous? Is it the poles, or do they make kids more reckless?

OP posts:
pinkiponk · 06/05/2017 06:55

That's the problem, kids are way more wreck less when there's a net, and in my years of coaching the worse injuries (open fractures for example!) occur on the trampoline.
Also when you're doing somersaults if you crash into the net it stops your rotation and you're more likely to land on your neck, whereas if it's sunken you'll just land on the floor next to if if worse comes to worse!

I think you need to buy a proper in ground trampoline as the pads are ventilated - otherwise there's an annoying flapping noise with every jump! Plus you don't need to dig as big a hole.

DancingLedge · 06/05/2017 14:40

Thanksoutnumbered didn't know ground trampolines were a thing. Out here in the wilds, we've just been digging huge holes.Blush

lougle · 06/05/2017 14:48

We've had a sunken trampoline for years. We bought a 10ft Plum Play trampoline, then dug a hole and wrapped chicken wire and permeable weed liner around the legs of the trampoline to stop the earth collapsing in if a downpour loosened the sides of the hole, but still allowing water to drain through and away. It has been there very successfully and no accidents yet.
