Dog proofing our boundary

We have had a problem with a neighbour's dog getting into our garden and as our little boy is terrified of dogs, we are keen to find a solution. The neighbour has reminded us that it is our boundary and DH thinks we should put a fence up. However this would mean putting our hedge behind a fence. The neighbours also have a lot of trees along the boundary and some trunks encroach on our garden. It is already a very overgrown boundary. I'm wondering if it's going to wreck the fence and become even harder to maintain. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on how we can dog proof the boundary?

Dig the hedge out, put a fence up and replant in front of the fence?

What a lovely outlook you have. I wonder if you could use a close mesh wire and then allow the hedge to grow through it. It would become invisible in a year or two. It would be a shame to remove such lovely greenery, and it is great for privacy.

We have a similar type of hedge (not as tall) we dog proofed ours by putting a chicken wire type mesh all the way down the hedge as tight to the hedge as we could get it and it has done a brilliant job it doesn't look particularly great a first but the hedge quite quickly grows through it and it disappears completely out view within a year or two depending on the hedge.

I would go with the mesh, the boundary may be yours but dog proofing is their responsibility. It would be horrible to remove such a mature feature with a fence.

I agree that mesh is a good idea. We've used it in part of our garden to keep our dogs in. The hedge really does hide it. All I'd say is keep an eye on animals trying to dig underneath it. We have foxes and a badger that do their level best to do this....!

Thanks for the suggestions. It sounds like mesh might be the way to go!

but as he's a twat I would go with mesh as well bright orange builder's one where he has to look at it from his dide

Part of me would want to catch the dog every time it came into my garden and drop it off at the local shelter. I believe they often charge the owner to reclaim...
