Yellow kitchen cabinets - what colour walls?

I didn't chose the yellow, but it's what we have. It's a sort of strong but light yellow. The walls are currently a pale grey, what colour might work to freshen it up a bit? Would a soft green clash too much? Any ideas?

I'd love to know what was going through someone's head when they chose these cupboards and tiles. I'm tempted by tile transfers but I don't know if you can get them in a tiny size?

you know you can paint cupboards?, or 'fablon' them, if you're on fb there is a brill diy group!

emsyj37 · 20/04/2017 10:14

Tile transfers are just stickers, so you could cut them to size if need be. I used them on my fireplace in my living room, they dont look too bad. They do come in a variety of sizes.

Bluntness100 · 20/04/2017 10:16

I'd paint those, honestly op they can't look worse. Past that I'd just for cream walls, brighten it up a bit.

Thurlow · 20/04/2017 11:00

These have a sunken recess otherwise I'd fablon them - have fabloned all the Ikea furniture in the house!

I think the tiles are the issue - they don't match either the cabinets or the suggested paints either. Can you do anything to change them?

DevelopingDetritus · 20/04/2017 11:40

Only one other PP that I've noticed has mentioned white. This is the most obvious I'd say. You can't get rid of it so embrace it, yellow accessories too.

Sorry, just saw your picture, I was thinking more this colour.

Yes to tile paint as they are the problem not the units!

NoCapes · 20/04/2017 12:40

Not grey - Grey would look awful with those tiles
I'd paint the brown around the cabinets white first (why is it brown?!) that'll make them look really different and then go from there
Is there such a thing as tile paint??

NoCapes · 20/04/2017 12:42

Oh and I wouldn't go for blue either, blue & yellow is very 90's I think

BusterGonad · 20/04/2017 12:49

Tile paint!

Do not do terracotta or dark green! When I moved in to my last place I had that colour cupboards - terracotta tiles and dark green appliances- absolutely vile!

DragonNoodleCake · 20/04/2017 12:54

I like the Navy that sema posted

NoCapes · 20/04/2017 12:56

Shock why am I just learning that tile paint exists?!
I've lived with purple tiles in my bathroom for 5 lonnnnng years - off to B&Q I go Grin

mando12345 · 20/04/2017 13:02

I imagined a brighter yellow! The cupboards aren't so bad, those tiles are an abomination.
We had the same problem in an old house, we paid a plasterer to remove the tiles and replaster. We then painted where the tiles were as well as the kitchen and had a glass splashback put on behind the hob, ordered over the Internet and stuck it on ourselves. Kitchen looked much better for a few hundred.

Qwebec · 20/04/2017 14:14

NoCapes wait, you might want to look it up first. From what I have heard tile paint does not perform well in bathrooms and peels off relatively fast.

DragonNoodleCake · 20/04/2017 14:53

I've tried tile paint - was a disaster- I do NOT recommend it.
(I might just be shit at applying it - but I've heard others say don't do it)

NoCapes · 20/04/2017 15:32

Oh bugger I was all excited for a minute there

BusterGonad · 20/04/2017 15:34

Forgive me, I didn't know it was shite!

Qwebec · 20/04/2017 17:53

painted tiles worked well in my kitchen so is a sensible option for OP

Nocapes start a thread about your bathroom I'm sure there is a way to make it nice

wonkylegs · 20/04/2017 18:28

I used tile paint in a bathroom and it worked well (thank god as I had four walls of floor to ceiling tiles which had a pattern that could only be described as 70's pink penises BlushShock), preparation is key though, you have to have scrupulously clean & grease free tiles & grout . I only used white and it lasted a good 5 years until I could afford a new bathroom.
