I'm a newbie - just discovered this forum and its incredibly useful/ helpful. I am really stuck on a solution for my 1930's 3 bed house with large curved bay windows. The sun rises to the left of the back of the house travels to the right and is then at the front of the house by 1pm - god knows what that means re north/ south facing - please help. I'm useless on this .
I trust your expert knowledge and advice xx

I have oak flooring throughout and will be getting John Lewis's Finesse Retro Loop Carpet(Green Park) on the stairs.

The woodwork ceilings coving and skirting board will be brilliant white.

Im looking for a neutral grey to paint throughout the whole house bar the main bedroom and living room.

Wanting to go a little darker in those two aforementioned rooms. I'm looking for a colour distinction between the walls and coving etc in general as my whole house is currently white and I'm so bored of it now!!

Colours that I'm liking so far...

Polished pebble/ pebble shore/ dusted moss/ cornforth white/Egyptian cotton.

From your own experience/ knowledge what would you suggest please? Thanks

I fell like I've looked at every grey paint under the sun this last week.

Was very close to choosing polished pebble but have opted for China Clay by Johnstones once I'd gotten a tester. It's more of a beige grey than polished pebble I think? Its exactly the shade I was looking for.
I'm told Johnstones trade paint is very good too- and really well priced

Should've added- I got 5 litres of the Johnstones China clay for £28. They even deducted the price of the tester pot for me

Polished Pebble can look light blue in darker rooms I've found.
Pebble Shore is warmer and I have it in my hallway, dining room and kitchen - it's my favourite grey.
Thimble case is one to think about too - a pale grey that I know a few property developers use as their default. All those colours are by Dulux.

We have Dusted Moss in the halls and bedrooms. I love it, a pretty pale grey with the barest hint of green rather than the blue, pink or lilac hints that pale grey can have. Our sitting room is Egyptian Cotton, which is a griege. Also easy to live with. Both colours look good next to white coving and woodwork.

After. Buying nearly 20 sodding testers we want for farrow and Ball blackened. Its a lovely true grey but not a cold grey

We have Dulux Porcelain Doll throughout our hall and landing. It's a lovely light soft grey. We also have Dulux Just Walnut in one of the bedrooms. It's a bit darker but still a beautiful colours.

F&B skimming stone, mixed at Johnstones is what I use as my neutral grey.

We have Dulux Chic Shadow in several rooms. It looks different depending where the light falls on it that visitors often ask if it's two or three different shades of grey. It's a very soft grey and I love it!

Just Walnut

I picked up about 20 different colour cards from Dulux (polished pebble) B&Q's own colours range and Valspar. Brought them home and stuck them up on the wall.

Narrowed it down to 3 colours including polished pebble but prefer Valspar premium paint range so they colour matched it.

Use white printer paper and paint the several sheets with the tester paint, writing which one it is on the bottom of the sheet. Put the sheets near to corners because depending on how the light falls depends on what colour it looks. Far easier than painting a wall because you can move them around.

Have chosen the match to Polished Pebble. It is for the hall, stairs and landing.

Calluna by Farrow and Ball is beautiful. A slight tinge of lilac but it's grey really. Looks different in different lights at different times of day. I've just done most of a 5 bed 1930s house in it. You can get it coloured matched if you don't want to pay F and B prices.

We went for 'corona cloud' for west facing rooms and it's lovely and subtle but looks great with white.

DanyellasDonkey · 15/04/2017 10:37

Personally I would go for cream rather than grey for an overall colour. I have Dulux Natural Calico almost everywhere in my house and it looks nice in our estate agent's photos.

I would have thought grey was nice previously, but having seen photos of another house with grey painted walls and a feature wall of grey patterned paper in the living room, it really doesn't look nice.

just got off the phone to the lovely lady at F & B - She established that I've got an east facing back garden and a west facing fron living room.

I was veering towards cornforth white in the high traffic communal areas and back bedrooms but she thought it may be a tad too dark as I have a light open airy scandi feel to my place. She suggested ammonite instead. For the main east facing living room and bedroom above she suggested elephants breath for warmth and cosiness because the colour really comes into its own when the sunsets as its west facing.

God... your responses have been fab so far and I will be getting testers of pretty much all of them

We've used Dulux Timeless Classic Engrave Locket throughout and everyone comments on how good it looks. It's a very true, cool grey.

We have Egyptian Cotton and White combination in most rooms bar the living room which is a much darker shade. We used B&Q Taupe for that room as our sofas are cream and some of the more grey shades really clashed with them. The Egyptian Cotton is my favourite - it looks different in each room. In the bathroom it really looks great against the white bath. And in the bedroom I have it on all the walls and it looks really crisp and fresh next to all the white furniture and bed linen.
