How to clean toilet waste pipe

I think this is a niche problem but hoping someone has a bright idea! We're having our bathroom redone and the old suite was removed a few weeks ago, so the pipe which used to be connected to the loo is just open. It smells terrible, especially when we put the heating on. I'd like to clean it but not sure what to use. If I try and get some bleach in there I won't be able to rinse it out very well so the bleach (or any other product I use) will be hanging around, possibly damaging the pipe? I don't know. Photo to illustrate the problem!

I don't think they are designed to be cleaned in that way! Surprised the plumber left you with an open waste pipe that's gross 😷. Can you tie something around it to make it air-tight?

I'm guessing this is a temporary problem? I would put a plastic bag over it with an elastic band to make it tight. And buy a reed diffuser.

Cleaning it will do no good, it's directly connected to the sewer and it's the smells from the sewer which will be coming up the pipe.

Thanks all for the unanimous response! I will put a bag over it for now and hope things improve once the new loo is installed

Maybe put a black plastic bag over it then tape it down with gaffa tape to create a make-shift plug?

Basically use thick plastic and a wide tape so you can make a proper seal.

Yeah, I have an out house bog pipe covered over with plastic bag.

Urgh - you can buy a kind of plug to block it temporarily. I thought sewer gases were potentially dangerous so it should not have been left like that.

100% tie it off. And quick before a rat comes up.

I expect it is about 110mm grey plastic but measure it to make sure.

As you do not want it fixed permanently, I would tape round it.

Explain to the counterhand that you already have a WC elbow with a rubber sealing ring in place.

btw I would probably clean it with a nylon washing-up brush and flash or similar GP cleaner, and wipe off with kitchen roll.

Probably bin the brush afterwards.

The rubber sealing ring needs to be clean to form a good seal. You can rub it with WUL so the stop end slides in.

We have this exact situation at the moment, it was very smelly when the wind came a certain way (no pun intended) but since I put cling film tied with string it's been fine!

Gross they left it like that! My bathroom fitter sealed it up whilst the bathroom was in progress with some thick plastic and tape.
