How practical are painted walls above kitchen upstand?

The kitchen saga continues! Having been convinced I wanted glass splashbacks, after getting quotes, I'm struggling to justify the cost.

We will be having granite upstands and can get a stainless steel splashback behind the cooker and extend the granite upstand behind the sink up to the window but everything else would be painted.

To those who have no tiles or splashbacks except behind the cooker and sink- is it easy to live with?

I'm slightly OCD in terms of marks on the walls and unless I found paint that wiped clean it would drive me insane.

Is painting madness?

I've gone for quartz 10cm upstand, full length quartz behind cooker & windowsill quartz too.

I plan on prepping at breakfast bar &
Using slow cooker, actifryer etc in utility room which is tiled so hopefully paint stays fine!

francis that's exactly my thoughts on metro tiles too.

They seem to be virtually the only option for a kitchen and the remind me of a public convienence.

Plus the fact they're shall means there's loads of grout with is more of a pig to clean than paint.

Don't know why I posted that I was having stainless steel behind the hob. DH just reminded me that I chose sparkly glass. Confused

Tubbyinthehottub · 02/04/2017 20:57

I've got quartz upstands and quartz behind the hob and up to the window sill where the sink is. No problems at all. I've got whatever the kitchen/bathroom Little Greene paint is.

When we had tiles they got into a disgusting state, since we have had the new kitchen I've been more careful with my cooking, chop and prepare ingredients before I start etc. We also have glass splashback behind the cooker hob and the Minerva goes up to under the window cill and we had a window ledge made out of it too, so the sink area is covered..

I had walls painted with kitchen paint above the upstands in my last house. Really easy to wash, and hard wearing. I hate cleaning greasy tiles - the grout is always really manky.

Hope you post pictures when it's finished Smile

Bear can I make a alternative suggestion.

B&Q and Homebase sell sheets of plastic huge pieces that are designed for seamless shower walls to look like glass.

We had it in our old house in red. It was easily for a carpenter to install as it went in, in big chunks. We had it in red and it looked just like glass. And it was hell of a lot cheaper too

We now just have upstands in our new house and I hate it. Around by the cooker is stained and it has patches where I peel spuds and under the window by the sink is grim as I'm so used to being able to fling anything up the walls.

If you like I can try and find a picture of my old kitchen. They come in a range of colours. We got ours from b&q in 2013 and they were just introducing into the kitchen department.

Here is a link to the panel we had and the colours.

Homebase do more colours than this company and I'm sure it's a lot cheaper than when we got it as other companies make it now.

Quartz upstands here, we have a glass splashback behind the hob.
No problems at all. Even with messy DS1 and his newfound baking/cooking hobby.

I've just found this picture in my phone from two years ago. We saw this in one of the kitchen shops and I snapped a pic as we plan on doing the same here with black quartz and the plastic splash back. Possibly purple as our new kitchen is quite small and needs a feature.

Thanks pinky, that's an interesting option to explore.

Im a no splashback no tile person. Ive got F&B eggshell on the entire cooker wall and also sink wall. Its brilliant. Completely washable and waterproof. Just a very slight sheen, no where near a sheeny as a satin. If youre after a no fuss looking room can highly recommend.

Bearbehind · 04/04/2017 13:16

Bathroom panels are a no go- they don't come long enough to do the main runs in my kitchen without a join, which I wouldn't like.

I haveno idea whatan upstand is?

I have paint, it wipes down, it's fine.

LadyHamilton29 · 04/04/2017 18:40

I was about to say Vistelle panelling but see you have ruled it out.

My kitchen is huge I have a join where the upstand behind the cooker is. Most upstands fall short in between the cabinets but I have mine from cabinet to cabinet and so the join is the natural join line and it's pretty seemless. My husband fitted ours and he is a complete novice. Someone who knows what they are doing would have it as seamless as glass.

If you want a picture OP PM me, please don't let it put you off that you need a join as if your kitchen is anywhere similar to mine you will need a join anyway.

SanBlas · 04/04/2017 19:01

Glass is annoying to clean, always smeary, same as stainless steel, I'd go for what ever your work top is as splash back for Oven/sink and paint walls. Or tiles with dark grout look good IMO.

Bearbehind · 04/04/2017 19:41

Thanks lady but one wall has a 3m run with no breaks and I'd always see the join!
