An alternative to cream carpet

Hello everyone,

I'm refurbishing a property I'm buying and a bit stuck for what to do with the carpet colour. I'm having oak floors on the ground floor and then carpet up the stairs and into the two bedrooms. My house isn't huge so I need light coloured carpets, initially I really wanted a light cream colour as I'm having white walls. But I have a toddler...and cats... so I've decided against it 😆I don't want wood upstairs so I'm a bit stuck as to what other colour I should use to still create the look of space and be neutral.

Any ideas please?

Thanks

Or I was thinking of just putting the oak flooring I'm putting on the ground floor - upstairs as well. It's just me and my daughter so I don't think noise would be such an issue. It would look so much nicer, the only issue I think have is the stairs - they would have to be carpeted! It would look very odd having only the stairs carpetedConfused

I think the problem is...I don't like carpet.

Thanks to everyone for trying to help!

I don't like carpet much either! We are going to refinish the floorboards in all our upstairs rooms and the landings and then have rugs for cosiness underfoot. For the kids' rooms I'm going to get smaller cotton rugs with underlay, (probably IKEA) so any spills and they can be chucked in the washing machine, and if really dire, binned. I am slightly stumped about the stairs - I like the look of bare wood, but I think it's too noisy (terrace) and too slippery with kids, so think we will go for a runner up the stairs - may be a nice stripe like a PP. I don't think it looks weird on it's own.

That's what I was thinking too Edie. I just thinking with a child and animals wood is so much better and looks lovely. The only thing is the stairs in my house I doubt will have nice wood under it (it's not a period property) so the sides will be horrible I suspect.

This is all definitely helping me with my decision. Thanks everyone.
