Getting rid of bathtubs and replacing with showers - any regrets ?

We are about to renovate bathrooms in our house and are contemplating getting rid of tubs and replacing with big showers. Kids now teenagers so mainly shower but have the odd bath now and again as do me and DH. Getting to the seat in shower stage :) The alternative is to get bigger tubs, house was new build and developers probably just put in job lot along the road - the tubs are not wide/deep. Maybe we would have used more if baths were deeper.
Just wondering if anyone has done this and how they got on ?

I'm a community Occupational Therapist and a huge proportion of our referrals are for people struggling with getting in and out of the bath. Then your heart sinks when you go and see them and find they have a fancy schmancy tub that no aids on earth will fit. Just saying.

My ideas on those short bathtubs with a door are based on the time I rented somebody's Ex Granny Annexe. I was in my 20s at the time, so no mobility problems. Grin

The floor space when you stood up to shower was only about 30cm wide (so not big enough for both feet) with most of the area given over to the seat. I ended up showering with one foot up and one foot down...

So, an uncomfortable showering experience and sit-down bathing where I always felt something had been "missed" !

I think what I'm trying to say is: make sure there's a large area for your feet if you want to use the tub as a shower, too.

Those Omnitubs do look very nice!

I don't see the point of shower only. You can get proper shower screens around the bath and a big shower over it so you have the best of both worlds. After a long day I love soaking in the bath with a book or by candlelight. After exercise a quick shower is good. If there's room for a tub, you can always have both.

If there is room for a bath I would always have a shower over a bath, unless there are mobility issues that make getting into and out of a bath difficult.

If you've more than one bathroom I'd keep a bath in one of them.

If you're thinking of buying a large deep bath, the only thing I would caution is height of the individuals using it. We have a large bath for DH but if I use it I have to only put a bit of water in because, when it's full I float!! Sounds good but in reality its a pain.

Thanks all for your input, just an update, we've decided to get rid of the tubs. The plumbing will still be there so that if we ever need to reinstate sometime in the future, there will be no problem.
